(OFFICIAL) Proceedings of the Police Jury, Opelousas, La., June 3, 1907. The Police Jury met in regular ses sion this day with the following mem bers present: Dr. W. F. Clopton, Presi dent; Messrs. Stelly, Adraste Lafleur, Halphen, Richard, Muller, Haas, Des hotels, Guillory, Dailey, Savant, B. L. Lafleur, Manuel, Arceneau, Vidrine and Bertrand. On motion of Mr. Dailey Duly seconded and carried, the Police Jury resolved itself into a Board of Re viewers to pass upon the assessment rolls submitted by the Assessor. On motion of Mr. Manuel The Board of Reviewers adjourned until 2 o'clock p. m. EVENING SESSION. The Board of Reviewers met pursuant to adjournment. Present: Dr. Clopton, President; Messrs. Durio, Stelly, Vid rine, B. L. Laflenr, Adraste Lafleur, Hal phena Richard, Bertrand, Guillory, Dat ley,;davant, Manuel and Arceneao. On motion of Mr. Manuel The Board of Reviewers adjourned until to-morrow morning at 9:.30 o'clcck. June 4,1907. The Board of Reviewers met pursuant to adjournment. Present: Dr. W. F. On motion of Mr. Dailey The Board of Reviewers went into regular session of Police Jury. Motion by Mr. Savant That the report. of committee ap pointed to purchase and contract for a Judge's bench,"and clerk desk for court room, be received and accepted, com mittee discharged and that a warrant be issued in the sum of one thousand dol lars in favor of Judge E. T. Lewis in payment of said work as per appropria tion. Motion carried. Motion of Mr. Dailey- Resolved, that the contract signed this day on behalf of the parish by Messrs. L. D. Stelly, Adolph Guillory and Aug.J. Muller with the Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Co. for the con struction of a draw-bridge across Bayou Courtableau be and the same is hereby ratified and approved and the committee discharged. Motion carried. Received from Mr. Adolph Guillory the sum of five dollars realized from the sale of old lumber, let ward. Motion by Mr. Vidrine That the sum of forty dollars be ap propriated out of the 7th ward road funds of 1907 to build a bridge over the Artelus Vidrine gully in little Mamon, and that Messrs. Numa Morein, Artelus Vidrine and Adolph Andrus be ap pointed to sell contract to lowest bidder and receive same when completed. Messrs. Stelly, Vidrine, B. L. Lafleur, Halphen, Muller, Bertrand, Haas Gull lory, Dailey, Savant, Manuel, Clopton and Arenan, voting yes. Motion carried. Motion by Mr. Halphen That the sum of one hundred dollars be appropriated out of the 1st ward funds, to build a bridge near the pro. perties of Messrs. Stokes and Richard, and that work be done under the super .vision of Mr. J. O. Chachere and re ceived by him when completed. Messrs. Stelly, B. L. Lafleur, Vidrine, Halphen, Bertrand, Haas, Dailey, Sa vant, Manuel, Clopton and Arcenean, voting yes. Motion carried. Motion by Mr. Stelly That the sum of four hundred dollars, or as much thereof as may be necessary, be appropriated out of the 3rd ward fJunds, to build a bridge over Coulee (arks, on road from Leonville to Fro sard bridge, and that Messrs. Aristide Marks, Emile Spyrer and John Spyrer be appointed a committee to sell the contract to lowest bidder and report at next regular meeting. Messrs. Stelly, Vidrine, B. L. Lafleur, Halphen, Muller, Bertrand, Haas, Dai ley, Savant, Manuel, Clopton and Ar ceneau, voting yes, Motion carried. Motion by Mr. Muller That the report of committee ap pointed to sell contract for repairing the bridge at Beggs be received and ac cepted, committee discharged, and the sum of forty dollars ordered credited to Mr. R.Zernott, Sr., out of the 5th ward funds. Motion carried. Motion by Mr. B.L. Lafleur That the report of committee ap pointed to sell contract for building the bridge across Coulee-de-Maron be re ceived and accepted, committee dis charged and the sum of one hundred and thirty-five dollars ordered credited to Mr. Alibe Bertrand out of the 7th ward road funds of 1907. Motion car ried. Motion by Mr. Haas That the sum of twenty-five dollars be appropriated out of the 6th ward funds to repair two bridges; one over Buck gully and one over the Bayou Nez-Pique, near Wm. Goodwin's, and the work to be done under the supervision of Messrs. P. 11. Singleton, S. H. Thomas and M. L. Fontenot. Messrs. Vidrine, B. L. Lafleur Adraste Lafleur, Halphen, Muller, Bertrand, Haas, Dailey, Savant, Manuel, Clopton and Arceneau, voting yes. Motion car ried. Motion by Mr. Manudel That an appropriation of fifty dollars be made out of the 8th ward funds to re build the bridge over the gully on piece of road leading from Prud'homme road and connecting with the Acadia parish road; the contract to be sold to lowest bidder by Messrs. Homer Fruge, Cleo phas Fruge and M. Billeandeau and re ceived by said committee when com .pleted. Messrs. Stelly, Vidrine, B. L. Lafleur, Adraste Lafleur, Halphen, Muller, Ber trand, Haas, Dailey, Savant, Manuel, Clopton and Arceneau, yoting yes. Mo tion carried. Motion by Mr. B. L. Savant The Police Jury resolved itself into a Board of Reviewers. Motion by Mr. Stelly The Board of Reviewers resolved it self into regular session of Police Jury. Motion by L. D. Stelly That the sum of two hundred and sev enty-five ($275) dollars, be appropriated out of the road fund, of the 3rd ward, left over from the years 1905 and 1906 for the purpose of reflooring the bridge over Bayou Teche at Arnaudville, work to be done under the supervision of Adam Guidry, Wade Higginbotham and D. H. Bernard, provided that said work be done free of charge to the parish by the corporation of IArnatdville, com mittee to report %t the next regular meeting. Messrs. Durlo, Stelly, Vidrine, Adraste Lafleur, Halphen, Muller, Bertrand, Haas, Dailey. Savant,Clopton, Arceneau voting yes. Motion carried. Motion by Mr..Dario, seconded by Mr I Hass, th~at a warrant be issued against the general funds in favor of Mr. E. S. Clements, to the amount of seventeen and 20-100 dollars; said amount having been paid through double assessment, year 1905. Motion carried. Motion by Mr. Adraste Lafleur That the sum of forty dollars be ap propriated out of the 7th ward road fwnds of 1907, to repair the end of De baillion bridge, and two others bridges on road leading from Ben Lafleur's bridge over Bayou Grand Louis; work to be done under supervision of the road inspector of said ward. Messrs. Durio, Stelly, Vidrine, B. L. Lafleur, Adraste Lafleur. Halphen, Mul ler, Bertrand, Hasas, Dailey, Savant, Manuel, Clopton, and Arcenoau, voting yes. Motion carried. Motion by Mr. Savant Resolved, that the amount of fifteen hundred dollars budgeted out of the revenues of 1907, for paving of Court House square, be and the same Is hereby placed at the disposal of the Board of Aldermen of the City of Opelousas for said purpose; and further that the com mittee appointed by the Police Jury at a prior meeting, having in charge the avng of said Court House square, be ischarged. On motion of Mr. Savant The Police Jury resolved itself Into a Board of Reviewers. Motion by Mr. Savant Resolved$ that the asseesment of the Opelousas Mercantile Co. Ltd, remain as fixed by the Parish Assessor for the year 1907. Mr. Haas moved as an amendment, that the assessment of the Opelousas Mercantile Co. Ltd, be fixed at forty-two thousand six hundred and fifty dollars, being one-half of their inventory as shown by their inventory books pre sented to this body. Mr. Savant moved to table the amend ment, seconded by Mr. Dailey. Motion to table carried. A vote was then taken on the original motion and carried. On motion of Mr. Manuel The Board of Reviewers adjourned until 2 o'clock p. m. EVENING SESSION. The Board of Reviewers met pursuant to adjournment. Presents Dr. Clop ton, President; Messrs. Motion by Mr. Manuel Be it resolved, that the Police Jury sitting as a Board of Reviewers, approve the assessment lists as presented by the Assessor and direct that they be turned over to Mr. L. J. Dossmann, the assessor of the parish of St. Laedry. Motion carried. Mr. Dailey in the chair. Motion by Dr. Clopton That the report of committee appoint ed to purchase a right of way from Mr. Vincent Boagni, for a public road from Waxia to Palmetto, be received and ac cepted, committee discharged and the sum of forty dollars ordered credited to Mr. R. L. Hawkins for payment of said right of way, out of the 4th ward funds. Motion carried. Mr. Durio was called to the chair as president pro tem, by Dr. Clopton, President. Motion of Mr. B. L. Laileur That a committee composed of Messrs Jules Reed, Henry Pierote and Louli Bacon, be appointed to ascertain the probable cost of rebuilding the bridge across Point Froizin, and also as to the best location for same, and report at next-regular- meeting. Motion- carried, Motion by Mr. Vidrine That the petition from citizens of the 7th ward, asking that Mr. Eusebe Tite be authorised to change the public road which leads from Ville Platte to Dan Quirk's, be received and tabled until next regular meeting. A delegation of over 50 members of the local order of Knights of Col uibus went to New Iberia on a secial train last Sunday, to partici pate in the initiatory ceremonies of a number of candidates, which took -place in that city that day. They returned here at day light Monday morning, tired, of course, and sleepy too, but with the echo of a royal time in the city by the Teche pulsating in their hearts. Being Done. On our first page it is announced that harvest time on the courthouse square would commence next week. Itis said that a man in a neighboring town recently. resorted to the meanest trick on record to get his wife to dig up the garden. He went out with a spade and a hoe, and after searching around for awhile he went to the house to wash sff a dime and a quarter. Back to the garden he went whistling, "In The 3ood Old Summer Time." Presently he name back again. This time he showed mother quarter and remarked that he could afford to take a nap; he had nade enough -for one day, anyhow. A bulletin issued by the United States Department of Agriculture from the office of Public Roads shows that in 1904 there were 121,409 miles of public road the State of Texas. Of this mileage, 1,909 miles were surfaced with gravel, 167 miles with stone, and 52 mlnles with shell,making.s all 2,128 miles of improv ed road. It will be seen from these figures that 1.7 per cent of the roads have been improved. By comparing the total road mileage with the area of the State it appears that there was about OA0 of a mile of public road per square mile of area. A comparison of mileage with popuilatn show that there was Ilmile of road to every 25 inhabitants and 1 mile of improved road to every 1,432 inhabitants. Jonas Rosenthal, the Alexandria gro. eer, has tried the following recipe, and says it is perfect.. Brush the ham thoroughlyj with a dry brush removing every particle of mold. Soak for an hour in cold water and then wash it well. With a sharp knife shave off cleanly the hardened surface from-the face andmbutt of the ham.
