DEMETRIUS L. FONTENOT. Mr. Demetrius L. Fontenot is a candidate for Justice-of-the-Peace for the Fifteenth Justice's Ward of the parish of St. Landry, and an nounces his candidacy in this week,s Clarion. Mr. Fontenot is one of the g" ood citizens of the Ville Platte sec t. h of the parish, and has a host of friends who will support his candi dacy for the office to which he aspires, and which he is well capable both in tellectually and educationally to fill. He has been a deputy sheriff ever since his majority, holding his first commission under Sheriff Duson. He taught public school for several terms. YVES L. FONTENOT. Prof. Yves L. Fontenot announces his candidacy for member of the Lower House of the General Assem bly from this parish. His write-up will appear in another issue of the Clarion. MR. DESHOTELS WITHDRAWS. Mr. J. B. Deshotels has withdrawn from the race for police juror of the fifth ward. He wishes to thank his numerous friends for their promises of support, and to assure them that it is on account of the press of busi ness that he is forced to abandon the race. Death of Robert Carson. Robert Earbee Carson, second son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Carson, died of typhoid-malarial fever at the resi dence of his brother, B. R. Carson, at Oakdale, Calcasieu parish, on Thurs day, August, 29, 1907, age 24 years, 9 months and 14 days. The remains were brought by his parents in the still hours, between 5 o'clock in the afternoon of Thursday, and 7 o'clock in the morning of Fri day, by carriage from Oakdale to Ope lousas, and turned over to the Wood men of the World and interred at 4 o'clock of Friday in the Bellevue cemetery. Burial service was con ducted by Rev. A. C. Holder and Wil low Camp No. 47. W. O. W., of Ope lousas. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Carson extend thanks to the many kind friends of Oakdale, Opelousas and Bellevue, for i the sincere and valued attention to their son Robert during his illness, death and funeral. SOCIETY and PERSONA -Miss Ermine Smith, of Alexandria has been visiting Mrs. Henry Lastrapes in Opelousas. -Mrs. Albert McGinis, of Alexandria, has been spending several days in Opel ousas, the guest of her sister, Mrs. Henry Lastrapes. Jr. -Mr. R. Lee Hawkins, a prosperous merchant of Waxia, was in our city Wednesday. -Mrs, E. L. Loeb and little daughter Lena are in Plaquemine, visiting Mrs. Loeb's sister, Mrs. (Dr) Goudehaux. -Mrs. Braxton Carson, wife and baby, also Mr. Frank Fontenot, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Carson, of Oakdale, attended the funeral of their brother, otioert Carson, on Friday, August 30th. -Masters George Diibuisson, Josie Sandoz and Lawrence Andrepont, left Sunday for Springhill College, near Mobile, Ala. T' hey were accompanied as far as New Orleans by Mrs. Yves An drepont, Mr. E. B. Dubuisson and Mr. J. K. Sandoz. -Masters Andrew Dossmann and Martin Bordelon left Wednesday morn ing to attend Springhill College. -Editor E. Z. Hart, -of the Church Point Deipocrat, was a pleasant caller at the Clarion office Sunday. He reports the Democrat doing well and the coun try for Sanders. -Hon. Fred. J. Grace, candidate for Register of the State Land Office, was among the Hoo-Hoo visitors to Opel ousas last Saturday. -Miss Octavie Allen, of Alexandria, is one of the new teachers at the Opel ousas Female Institute. She is one of Alexandria's most charming and ac complished young ladies, and quite an acquisition to our city. -Mrs. Parrot is in Opelousas the guest of the Andrus family. -Mr. and Mrs. Allen Delarue, of Rayne, spent several days in Opelousas, the guests of relatives. -Mrs. E. K. Eiastham and children are home again, after spending the summer with relatives in Indiana. -Mrs. R. T. Marshall, Miss Eva Bor ing, of Shuteston, and Mr. and Mrs. M. J. Riddell, of Arnaudville, were Opel ousas visitors during the week. --Miss Sarah Lurch returned from a visit to relatives in New Orleans Sunday. -Mr. J. L. Guilbeau and Mr. Frank Guilbeau, of Grand Coteau and Sunset respectively, were mixing with friends here Tuesday. -Mr. Leopold Simon is again at his post at the St. Landry State Bank, after enjoying his summer vacation. -Mr. F. J. Dietlein, the Landry street jeweler, has returned from a business trip to Chicago, where he purchased his fall and holiday stock. -Mi erLola Daigle, of The Lake, is here,the guest of Miss Eva Guidry. -Mr. B. W. Leigh, of Monroe, was here this week, looking over growing Greater Opelousas. --Miss Kate Sullivan, Mr. Raoul Le Bourgeois and daughter, pretty little Blanche, were In Opelousas this week, the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Mason Mc Bride. -Mr. and Mrs. M. Winesberg and children, on Thursday of last week re turned from a three weeks' recreation at Hot Springs, Ark , where Mr. W. tells us his wife received ppreeiable benefit from the wondrous waters of the famous resort. Mr. W. himself did not go in search of health; he merely went along to pay the bills. It takes the company of a cashier to insure peace of mind to a health seeker at Hot Springs. -Mr. Murray Hetherwick, from Alex andria, is here, and is favorably im pressed with Greater Opelousas. -Mrs. J. A. Budd left Sunday with her two boys. Foster and Robert, and her daughter, Marie, to enter them at school, the boys at Springhill, Ala., and the daughter at Holy Cross Convent, New Orleans. -Master A. Veltin, Jr, left one day this week for Mobile, Ala, where he will enter Springhill College. -Miss Lucille Conway, who has been the accomplished guest of Miss Eva Dossmann for some weeks, returned to her home in New Orleans on Sunday. -Miss Daboval, of Rayne, spent Sun day in Opelousas. She was accompanied on her return home by Miss Kit Mudd. -Mr. M. Viiaseea returned Tuesday from a three weeks' vacation spent at Biloxi, Miss., looking much refreshed. -Miss Myrtle Potts is now stenogra pher for the Nigh-Rutledge Lumber Co. -Mr. L. E. Littell left for New Or leans Monday, where he goes for medi cal treatment. -Mr. S. H. Weil, organizer of the W. O. W., with headquarters at Shreveport, was here Monday. Mr. Weil was a former resident of our city-some 20 years ago occupying a clerical position with D. Roos. He was pronounced in his eulogies of the wonderful improve ment of the old city, and stated that no other town of its size is keeping up with progress as our city is doing. -Mrs. A. R. Blue and her sister, Miss R. Cummings, of New Orleans, who are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dim mick at Shuteston, drove to Opelousas Friday of last week, accompanied by Miss Crippen. Mrs. Blue and Miss Cummings are the daughters of Mr. Pete Cummings, who will be remem bered as one of the first agents of the Southern Pacific at this point. They found such a change in the old town that they could not find their former home here. They were delighted to pay Opelousas a visit, and will have much to tell their parents on their re turn to New Orleans. -Mr. E.K. Wallior returned home on Thursday, from his triumphial tour of Missouri with his wondertul horses, "Daniel J" and "Tennessee Hal." "Dan iel" won every race in which he was entered. When Mr. Wallior was told of Secretary Keith's certificate to the effect that at Higginsville "Bobbie Good" and "Daniel J" had tied for first money, he said that this was true as far as the ree olds of the track showed, but that be fore the last heat he was approached by the driver of "Bobbie Good" and told that if he (Wallior) would not drive to flag "Bobbie" he agreed to give "Daniel J" first money, and this agreement was carried out and "Daniel J" received first money. He says Dr. C. F. Boagni, Mr. G. R. Baillio and Mr. Remi Wallior wit nessed the agreement. Plaisance. Sunday, September 1st, a party of friends enjoyed a day of refreshing rec reation in the green woods of Plaisance. There was an abundance of wine, de licious sweet meats, and the barbecued mutton was excellent, thanks to Mr. Joe Lafond's knowledge of the roasting process. The jolly party consisted of the fol lowing families and individuals: The Lafonds, the Pitres, the Kaufmanns, the Roberst, the Woodruffs, Misses Ola Dou cet, Jennie Fields, Katie Arceneau, Messrs. E. T. Dupre, Alexis Castille, W. and J. Peckham and Jared Sanders (Omar) Latfleur. An excellent dinner (perhaps it was the woodland beauty, or the wine), had a buoyant effect, and the jollity reached a climax.- Even the "old folks" seemed to have again imbibed the spirit of youth. The long afternoon passed quickly and pleasantly. The guests, one and all, join in appre ciative thanks to Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Durio, the principal exponents of this much enjoyed social gathering. A GUEST. Barbreck. The weather for the past two weeks has been very hot and dry, which Is ciusing the totton to open very rapidaly on the sandy soil, but on the red soil its growth continues, and this growth is so great and the leaves are so thick that it is causing a great many of the bottom and only bolls to rot. The boil weevil has the top of the stalk in charge. Cane is looking fairly well, but is needing a soaking rain. Corn pulling has commenced, and a fair yield is reported. W. A. Biles is having his gin remodeled from an old style ginnery to an up-to-date one. He has as his mechanic Mr. McGinnis, of Bunkle, La. The W. O. W. met Sunday morning and initiated Soversigns Edward Stagg and Sumpter Reed, and passed on several more applications. We had at our meeting So vereign A. O. Patureau, of Alexandria, our organizer, and any R oodman who knows Mr. Patureau, likes him. Come again, Mr. Patureau; we are always glad to see you. He came down to close our charter. Mrs. Leroy Cambell spent several days out in Pine Prairie last week, visiting friends and relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Morrow, of Morrow, spent several days here last week, visiting relatives. Mr. Harvey Campbell, of Beaver, spent Saturday and Sunday with relatives here. Miss May Lewis left Monday for a trip to Chicot and the Piney Woods, visiting friends and relatives. Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Young, of St. Landry, were seen driving through town Sunday. Mr. Jim Savant, of Bunkie, as usual, was seen in St. Louis Sunday. The prices which have been paid to land owners for timber have caused many to have theirlines surveyed, Surveyor Roberts has been kept quite busy up here. Mr. John Wooley, of Jennings was shaking hands with friends and relatives here a few days ago. While here he and Louis Baldridge made a flying trip to Chicot. Protracted meeting closed at the White Chapel after church Sunday night, after running one week. Lan dry I'arish did at its session held on the 3rd day of Septemher, 19J07, ordain an election should be held throughout the third ward of St. Landry parish of Louisi ana, on the 15th day of October, 1907. Now, we the Board of Supervisors of election in and for the parish of St. Lan dry, duly qualified, commissioned and sworn by virtue of the authority in us vested, do hereby give public notice that on Tuesday, the 15th day of October, 1907, an election will he held throughout the third ward of the parish of St. Ian dry, at Leonville and Notleyville poll ing places, of said ward, at the last gener al election for the purpose of taking the sense of the property tax payers of the 3rd ward of St. Landry parish qualified according to the Constitution and Laws of the State of Louisiana, to vote at said election upon the question of levying a four mill tax per annum upon all the taxable property of said ward or so much of such four mills as may be necessary during the term of ten years to raise the sum of $13,500, for the years 1909 to 1913, inclusive, $1,200 per annum, and for the years 1914 to 1918, inclusive, $1,500. per annum, as specified in the ordinance adopted by the Police Jury of the par ish of St. Landry, in aid of the New Iberia, St. Martin & Northern Railroad Company of Louisiana.
