The opening of the New Lacombe, a modern hotel, in Opelousas, sup plies an enterprise much needed-an enterprise which it would have been impossible to continue much longer ithout. The old antiquated hotel building .ite scene of many historical episodes, :standing as it has a fixture of the ltY for over a century-had served purpose. It was no longer ade ate for a modern town-for mod tern Opelousas. In the days of old The Lacombe Hotel was the synonymi of the best in the land. It continued t hat reputation as far as the service was concerned, but the appointments became sorely backwards; the march of progress had left it behind. The gentlemen who, by persever Sanobe and tact, promoted the New Laoombe under trying circumstances, tie eatitled to congratulations, and t.he gratitude of the people of Ope teI.usas. ffYACINTHS AT THE LAKES . - :The advent of water lilies in The l~,akes is of vital importance not only to-' the members of the Opelousas Rod SOu(n Club, but to the community in feneral. _ It is of importance to the people of Spelousas, Church Point, Rayne and Gowley. The Lakes afforded one of the :~est fishing grounds in the "State and that it should be ruined by water .ties is nothing short of a calamity ' 9 the people of the places mentioned F.It is said that Gov. MHonest, conscientious, with ever a :mod word for Averyb 4, Austin A'llea held a warm place:inithe hearts ~i his fellowmen. f Mr. Allen was 79 years, 6 months and 16 days at the time of his death, .which occurred at the residence of iise son, F. Cliff Allen, after a brief illness with pneumonia. :Up to the time of his illness he was hale and hearty, and his family and friends counted many years for `.aim yet. There was no sign of ap proaching dissolution, and he was as ,iregular in his habits as when age did ot bear so heavily on him. On the morning of the beginning qf his illness, he worked in his gar edon, and it is believed that, he be eami b overheated and contracted peumonia. ! This the third death in the house o~ his son, F. Cliff Allen, within a imoth. The twins of Mr. and Mrs. Cli Allen died within the space of tvree weeks, and now the father of i-ereaved son. To the Honorable President and Mem bers of the Police Jury of St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. Your undersigned property tax-pay ers of St. Landry Parish, respectfully petition your Honorable Body to order a special election in the Opelousas School District, being further designa ted as School District No. One [1] of the First Police Jury Ward, and bounded as follows, to-wit: That the Court House in the City of Opelousas be taken as a starting point, that lines be run Three miles North, Three miles West, Four miles South, and Four miles East from said Court House or starting point; that parallel lines be run respectively through the three and four mile points North, West, South and East until the North and South parallel lines inter sect the East and West parallel lines, thereby creating a School District sev en miles square, and containing forty nine square miles. Said election to be called for the pur pose of submitting to the tax-payers of said district, entitled to vote at said election, the proposition of levying a special tax of three [3] mills on the dol lar for the period of twenty [20] years on all taxable property in said district for the following objects and purposes, viz: Said tax levy to be for the purpose, if necessary, of acquiring school grounds in the City of Opelousas, La., for school sites, play grounds, school gardens and other things necessary in school devel opment, and, especially, for the con struction of a large and commodious modern school building in the City of Opelousas; and to provide for adequate furniture and equipment of same. The title to which shall be vested in the public. And your petitioners further pray that your Honorable Body will embody in the call for this election, the submis sion to the tax-payers voting at said election, the question of issuing bonds or the funding into bonds the taxes which may be voted at said election in this school district, by virtue of this special election, for the purposes before enumerated. SECTION 1. Be it ordained by the Police Jury of the Parish of St. Landry In regular session convened, That a special election be held in School District No. One (1) of the First (1st) Police Jury Ward of the Parish of St. Landry, bounded and described as fol lows, to-wit: That the Court House in the City of Opelousas be taken as a starting point; that lines be run Three (3) miles North, Three (3) miles West, Four (4) miles South, and Four (4) miles East from said Court House or starting point; that parallel lines be run respectively through the three and four mile points North, West, South and East until the North and South parallel lines interest the East and West parallel lines, thereby creating a School District Seven (7) miles square, and containing Forty-nine (49) square miles; said election to be held on Tuesday the 22nd day of June, A. D., 1909, at the regular polling place established by law forthe First Precinct of the First Police Jury Ward of the Parish of St. Landry at the Court House of said parish In the City of Opelousas In said School District; at which said election shall be submitted to the pro perty tax payers of said district entitled to vote under the Constitution and laws of this state, the following questions to-wit: 1st. Whether or not there shall be levied a special tax of Three (3) mills on the dollar per annum for the period of Twenty (20) years on all taxable property situated in said School District for the purpose of ac quiring, if necessary, school grounds in the City of Opelousas,.Louisiana, for school sites, play grounds, school gardens and other things necessary in school development, and, especially, for the construction or a large and commodious modern school build ing the City of Opelousas, and to provide for adequate furniture and equipment of same, the title to which shall be vested in the public, in pursuance to law in such cases made and provided, and in conformity to the petition of miore than one.fifth of the property tax payers of said school district hereto annexed and made part hereof, said tax to be levied and collected in pursuance to and in accordance with law, beginning withthe year 1909. 2nd. Whether or not the taxes which may be voted at said election in said school dis trict shall be funded into bonds in accord ance with Act No. 84of the General Assembly of the State of Louisiana for the year 1906. SECTION 2. Be It further ordained, etc. That said special election shall be held under the general election laws of this State, and that the ballots to be used shall be printed in the form provided under said general election laws, and shall have print ed thereon: FOR a special tax of Three (3) mills on the dol lar per annum for the period of Twenty (20) years on all taxable property situated in School District No. One (1) of the First (1st) Police Jury Ward of the Parish of St. LanCry, for the purpose of acquiring, if necessary, school grounds in the City of Opelousas, Louisiana, for school sites, play grounds, schools gardens and other things necessary in school development, and, especially, for the construction of a large and commodious modern school building in the City of Ope lousas, and to provide for adequate furni ture and equipment of same, the title to which shall be vested in the public, said tax to be levied and collected in pursuance to and in accordance with law, beginning with the year 1909. AGAINST a special tax of Three (8) mills onlthe dol lar per annum for the period of Twenty (20) years on all taxable property situated in School District No..One (1) of the First (lst) Police Jury Ward of the Parish of St. Lan dry, for the purpose of acquiring, if neces sary, school grounds in the city of Opelousas, Louisiana, for schools sites, play grounds, school gardens, and other thihgs necessary in school development, and, especially, for the construction of a large and commodlus modern school building in the City of Ope lousas, and to provide for adequate furni ture and equipment of same, the title to which shall be vested in the public, said tax to be levied and collected in pursuance to and in accordance with law, beginning with the year 1909. AGAINST funding into bonds in accordance with Act No. 84 of the Generally Assembly of the State of Louisiana for the year 4906, the proceeds of special taxes voted and crrrled, or that may be voted and carried, this election. said ballots to have printed on same small square spaces of uniform size immediately following and opposite to and at the right of the printing following the words "For'" and 'Against" as above set forth, to have at the head printed Instructions to the vot ers to place their cross mark in the small square opposite the ballot they wish to vote, and to sign their names and write' the amount of the assessed valuation of the a property owned then by in said district on lines tndicated, which lines shall be provid ed at the bottom of the ballots; and said ballots to otherwise conform to the general election laws as aforesaid. SECTION 3. Be It further ordained, etc., That the Board of Superviors of Elections of the Parish of St. Landry be and they are hereby requested and directed to appoint º three commissioners and a clerk of election to serve and hold said election at the place established by law in'said district, to give due of said appointment and of the time and place of holding said election, and to make returns of said election to the Presi dent of the Police Jury, who shall announce and promulgate the result-of said election according to law. SECTION . Be it fortherordained, etc., That the Board of Supervisors of Elections of theParish of St. Landry shall have 1500 ballots printed In accordance with the pro visions of the general election law and of Section 2 of this ordinance, to be delivered by the Sheriff of this parish at the polling place in said schoot dlstrletwithin the time fixed by tihe general election law together with the ballot box and other election par aphernalia. SECTION 5. Be it further ordained, etc., That the Commissioners of Election shall receive the ballots of all property tax pay ers of said school district entitled to vote under the Constitution and laws of this State, and when the polls are closed shall count said ballots and make returns of the votes cast at said election both in number and amount of assessed valuation of pro perty of those who voted for said tax. and of those who voted aainst the same, and of those who voted for fending said tax into bonds, and of those who voted against the same. SECTION 6. Fontenot offered the fol lowing ordinance and upon being duly read was adopted unanimously, to-wit: AN ORDINANCE Ordering a special election at which shall be submitted to the property tax payers qualified under the -Con stitution and laws of this State, of the L'Anse Blen School District, further designated as School Dis trict No. Two (2) of the Seventh Po lice Jury Ward of the Parish of St. Landry, hereinafter more fully de scribed, the question of levyinga special tax of Five (5) mills on the dollar per annum for a period of Ten (10) years on all taxable property in said School District, for the purpose of acquiring school grounds and con structing and equipping thereon all such buildings as may be necessary for the successful operation of a public school, the title to which shall be vested in the public; and at which said election shall also be submitted to said tax payers of said district the question of issuing bonds or the funding into bonds of the tax es which may be voted at said elec tion in said school district, by vir tue of said special election, for the purposes before enumerated; all in pursuance to law in such cases made and provided, and in conformity to the petition of more than one-fifth of the property tax payers of said school district hereto annexed and made part hereto. Be it ordained by the Po lice Jury of the Parish of St. Landry in regular session convened, That a spe cial election be held in the L'Anse BTeu School District, further designated as School District No. Two (2) of the Sev enth Police Jury Ward of the Parish of St. Landry, bounded and described as follows, to-wit: commencing at the South-east corner of Section Nineteen (19) in Township Five (5) South of Range Two (2) East, running North three (3) miles, thence running West Three and one-eighth (3y) miles to Ba you des Cannes, thence South along said Bayou to the South-west corner of the property of Eraste Veillon, thence run ning South one (1) mile and twenty seven (27) chains to the South-west cor ner of Section Twenty-four (24), Town ship Five (5) South of Range One (1) East, thence running East four (4) milesi to the place of beginning; said election to be held on Saturday the 12th day of June A. D, 1909, at the lffice of Dr. W. H. Stagg within the bounds of said school district, there being no regularly established polling place therein, at which said election shall be submitted to the property tax payers of said dis trict entitled to vote under the Consti tution and laws of this State, the fol lowing questions, to-wit: let. Section 6. Be it further ordained, etc., That this ordinance and annexed petition of the property tax payers of said school district shall be published in the St. Landry Clarion, the oftcial jouanal of this parish, for the fall period of thirty clear days previous to the date of holding said election, and that this ordinance shall take effect from and after its passage.
