Louisiana Press FERTILIZE YOUR LAND. The best of our farmers will tell you that it pays to' fertilize your land, no matter what kind of a crop you may plant. But you should endeavor to find "out the specific elements of plant food needed by your soil, other wise you might fail to get the necessary results of a judicious application of fertilizers. By sending samples of your soil to the State Experiment Sta tion you can have it analyzed free of cost and be advised of the kind of fertilizer best adapted to your crop. Well rotted barnyard manure is good for almost every kind of soil or crop, but in the use of commercial fertilizers care should be taken to get the right kind. rhe three important constituents )f a commercial fertilizer are ni trogen, phosphate and potash, Each of these supply a different kind of organic matter, and often i combination will work the best result. Peas (legumes) planted From year to year and turned inder will supply nitrogen, be sides a good Apply of humus. Cultivate less land and use more fertilizer, -Tribune, EDUCATION Submitting that the average wage of teachers in the public schools in, the United States is ess than that of carpenters, oal miners, factory workers and :ommon laborers; that that coun ry has the shortest school year, .n the world; that schools burn lown at the rate of-one for every school day in the year, and that the system of providing free :extbooks is almost a century )ld, the Russel Sage Foundation, livision of education, made its -eport recently on an interstate !omparison of school systems. [t sets forth that the average wage of teachers in the public schools is less than $1 a day and that one State rents its convicts -y the year for more than it days it teachers, and that the unount for each child invested n school property ranges from )4 in the state to $151 in another. [n only five states is the teacher's wage more than $2 per day. The iighest average salary paid in he United States is $918 in Cali ornia, and the lowest is $200 in 1 o r t h Carolina. Thirty-six states have state-wide compul sory attendance I iws and Ohio ias complete legal regulation of ichool-house construction to in sure the safety and sanitation of he buildings. -Daily Signal. _ 0 WHAT IS A'DOLLAR? We think the following defini tion of a dollar is a pretty good one: A dollar is what some men promise to pay for their parish paper. It is something a news paper man enjoys more in anici pation than in reality. It is the price of a day's work for some men and a single night's drink for others. It is what the wife often urgently needs but seldom has. It is the power that makes or unmakes men. It is the hard est thing to get and the easiest thing to get rid of known to iankind. It is a blessing in a small measure and a curse in many instances. It is mighty and very scarce. No man ever had more than he wanted and no man ever will. A dollar is a snare and a delusion, and every one of us is chasing the delusion. -St. Helena Echo. SchoolBoard Proceedings. Supplemental Minutes of Par ish Board of School Directors omitted from minutes of meet ing held January 28th, 1913. On motion of Mr. Lyman the following resolution was adopted: Whereas, the report of the Finance Committee shows that the school fund for the session of 1912-'13 will be exhausted on Feb. 2s, at the end of a six months session; and Whereas, the rules and `regu lations of the State Board of Ed ucation require that all depart meiats of- approved high schools be operated nine months each year; and Whereas, it is the opinion of this Board that the high schools of the Parish are doing a valu able work in training boys and girls for citizenship, in fixing standards of morality, and main taining them and our educa tiohal ideals; and, Whereas, the removal of our high schools from the accredited list would result in the loss of state aid, and would check the great interest the people have manifested in educational prog ress in recent years: Therefore, be it resolved, That this Boar respectfully urges the Town Councils in the various towns in which the high schools are located to appropriate suf ficient funds to maintain them the remainder of the nine months session.
