"My Country 'Tis of Thee, Sweet Land
of Liberty."
First 1)raft Report.
Out of the first call of 1l6 there
were only 154 drafted men of
this parish who reported for
medical.exanmination and of this
number 61 failed on the test.
Of the 93 wbo passed there
were 47 who claimed exemption;
36 of these claims have been de
cided, 23 allowed and 13 disal.
lowed. It is estimated that
about 70 men will be gotten from
the first call. 114 more were
called for examination Thursday
and Friday of this week.
"In Camp."
T. J. Magee, the popular clerk
of the city court of Bogalusa, is
taking a fortnight's vacation and
is spending one week of his time
camping with a dozen or more
youngsters, who are having the
time of their lives, on Boguechitto
bluff, about four miles south of
Franklinton.
In the party are the boys from
the families of E. L. Magee, L.
T fBerkhalter, John Ulmer and
J.Tol. Brock. and the reporter
from camp last night said the
bunch is filling in the time pretty
well with fishing, bathing and
eating. In fact, appetites have
increased so 'the camp master
finds a pretty big job in keep
ing the larder supplied.
The party is to stay out till
Saturday morning.
Make Tomato Sauce When
Cauns Are Scarce.
Since tomatoes contain a very
high percentage of water, it is
often desirable to can only con
centrated tomato products. This
is true especially when can or
jars are ,difficult to obtain. A
delicious eoncentrated tomato
sauce may be made and canned
as follows, says the United States
Department of Agrioulture. Small
:-or broken tomatoes and large
.:tomatoes unsuitable for canning
whole, may be used in this recipe.
Cut the tomatoes into fairly
small oeces and add one large
' ion chopped and one cup
¶chapjed sweet red pepper to one
gallon of tomatoes. Cook until
tender. Put through a sieve and
add a mixture of one-third salt
oand two-thirds sugar in a pro
portion of one teaspoonful to each
quart of the mixture. Cook un.
til it has the consistency of ketch.
up, stirring constantly. Pack
hot into sterilized jars or bottles.
Adjust rubber and cap, place the
containers on a false bottom in a
vessel of water sufficiently deep
to reach almost to their tops and
allow them to remain at a boiling
temperature for 25 minutes.
Then remove the jars from the
:#_.ter and tighten the lids im.
airdiately.--L. S, U. Press Bul

Cotton Crop Increase Expected
Louisiana now has fewer boll
weevils than it has had in the
last ten years and the cotton crop,
as a result, will be materially
larger, according to W. R. Per
kins of the Louisiana State Uni.
versity agricultural extension de.
partment. Many estimate the
increase ove'r last year as 100,000
bales. Reports whloh Mr. Per
kins has received recently from t
all over the state say the farmeras
in every seotion are gratified i
over the scaroity of the pest. In
the northern part of the state the
weevil is said to have almost dis- o
appeared. The severe winter and I
unusually warm, dry spring and
summer, contributed materially
to the eradication of the weevil,
agricultural men say. Continu
ance of rainy weather that hase
preva'a~td recently, however, i
might bring out weevils in Sep C
tomber, I iis feared,

Puzzling English Pronunciation.
We may puzzle our brains over the
tongue-twisting names which France
and Russia have given to some of
their towns, but England furnishes a
few quite as dazzling as that of Prze
mysl. Hurstmonceaux, for instance, is
pronounced Her-so; Kirkcudbright,
Kir-coo-bree. Daventry, Dantry; Le

E-sham.
