BURNING OF A STEAMER had ware OFF THE LONG ISLAND COAST CAUSES by t THE LOSS OF TEN LIVES. i exce An Oow ,tIerror-..The Pilot Bravely Held fis Post Until the Vessel Bumpe4 on the TI Rooks---The Escaped Passengers Suffer. Only Immersion in Cold Water. New York.-The Bridgeport Line steamer Nutmeg State was burned in and Long Island Sound off Sands Point, L. alm( I., at sunrise Saturday morning, and sea ten persons were burned to death or agal drowned. Samuel Jayne Bridgeport, Conn. bag au gage master of Nutmeg State, body at the New York morgue. Nils Nilsen, member of the crew of the burned boat. Body not recovered from the wreck. 961 Charley Andesron, watchman on boat; body in wreck. Patrick Coffey, mate, body in wreck. gral Bernard Hendry, oiler, body in ed wreck. Thomas Mnrphrey, member of crew, intc body in wreck. mol John Connors, member of crew, body and in wreck. abi: Unknown woman, passenger, 28 dat years old; body recovered. fur Unknown man, passenger; drowned, vol body not recovered. sur Unknown girl, 4 years old; body re- tou c vered. Most of the passengers who escaped ri puffered nothing more than shock from tw4 Immersion in the chilly water, and only mo pour persons were. sent to the nospital. The steamer was run to the beach at so" the outbreak of the flames, and burned th5 to the water's edge. we The bodies of two victims of the dis- str pster drifted ashore about noon, on the' no: beach, a mile east of the blazing wreck. ge: One was the body of a woman about na 28 years old and the other a girl of 4 Co years. The Nutmeg State, with over a hun dred persons on board, bound from Con- M necticut towns to New York, was dis- ar covered on fire about 5:30, when she ie, was within a few miles of Sands Point, pt L. I. The flames were in the bow of i the boat, between the forward cabin , and the donkey engine room. The fire i was on the main deck and seemed to be pi a small affair, so Capt. C. M. Brooks, aL not wishing to needlessly alarm the g passengers, ordered the crew to work ce as quietly as possible with buckets and Nl hose. For about twenty minutes the w flames did not seem to be dangerous, ti and the men appeared to have them in ci control. Suddenly they burst into a de furious blaze amidship. Baggageman E Samuel Jaynes was detached from the fire fighters and sent to alarm the pas- o, - sengers and all the members of the it crew who were in the forward part of ( the boat. He ran through the passage ii ways in the several decks, shouting to c e the passengers and the sleeping crew. ii He remained amidships crying out t Swarnings unltil he was forced by the flames and stifling smoke to jump over u board. s The passengers in various stages of a frenzy rushed from the staterooms to e the upper deck. Life preservers were I given them and many of the men as- 5 sisted in putting them on the women and children. By this time the entire mile section of the steamer was burn ing fiercely and the people forward were completely cut off from communica tion with those on the after part of the boat. This left the people on the rear decks in a perilous situation, as the it e boats on the amidships davit were surrounded by flames and there were few of the crew in the rear to give aid. As the flames continued to spread both forward and aft, and, the pilot headed the steamboat at full speed tor the beaosch at Sands Point, the draft swept the fire toward the rear of the boat. The passengsa in that part of the boat went as far back on the rear deck as possible, but were enveloped with I black smoke and the flRames were lenpitu L toward them, threatening in a few mo ients to roast them alive. They hud died close to the rear rail in fear, wait or, ing for the steamer to strike the beach. With a shock the Nutmeg State struck the rocks on the bottom and I people seemed to shoot from all sides ffs and tried to reach the lifeboats whichl ms had been lauIchced on 'the forward pait of the vessel. All the passen - gere were in the w.tcr in a few mo par. ments, but manv mcnbcre of the crew had oecome imprisoned in the for ward part of the ship below decks by the flames. There was no outlet in the thick side of the steamboat, except the small port holes, through which no man could saueese. The first person to leave the burn ing steamer was Baggagemaster Jaynes, who gave the -alarm to the sleeping passengers. When the smoke and flames forced him amledhips, he almost exhausted, made a leap for the sea. In doing so he struck his head *4 against the guard rail and was stunned, falling into the water helpless. A launch from the steam yacht Kismet pic (tc him up and carried him to the Kiseiuc, where the brave fellow died shortly after being taken aboard. TWO HUNDRED KILLED.
