Disinfectants.
A recent medical journal gives
the following: "The best natur
al disinfectant, sunshine; best
germ disinfectant, for m ad e
hyde; best physical disinfectant,
soap; best moral disinfectant,
publicity."
Thus quotes the Ladies Home
Journal, and we repeat it be
cause nowhere in six lines of
print "will, youa find ;p hesS
so much information and wisdom.
In this form it can be easily re
membered, and should be memo
rized.
Physicians have long preached
the efficacy of sunshine as a dis.
infectant of disease. It is preach
ed anew in the now hopeful crus
) ade against tuberculosis, al
) though true of nearly every other
disease. And it is all the better
for humanity to know the virtues
of soap if they would attain that
cleanliness, which good John
Wesley thought next to godli
ness. Of formaldehyde, let med
ical science speak.
The most significant point in
this quotation is that publicity
is the moral disinfectant. It
would seem that every one would
agree to this, but no deed of evil
is ever done but the first impulse
is to conceal it, even as Adam
and Eve sought to hide in the fast
Snesses of Eden from God. Evil
shrinks not from what it has
done, but from other's knowledg(
of it. Even good people depre
cate the publication of evil doings
arguing that it teaches evil t
others. It may incidentally d(
that, but where one such learnt
the lesson of evil-doing, a hun
dred learn to fear its conse
quences.
It is true that through Dublici
ty many innocent persons wh
love the sinner are brought t
suffering and shame, but this als
Sis an inexorable law that througl
our common humanity many it
888 nocent suffer because of one tha
is guilty. It affords no reaso
why guilt should go unpunishe,
nor why the moral disinfectar
publicity should not he appliet
ank- A great many evils, miscegenf
Sand tion for instance, could no moi
survive publicity, except in tI
most abandoned cases, than
yellow fever germ, the applic
tion of formaldehyde. It is :
unpleasant duty to make publ
rom the dark ways of men and woi
that en but it is a duty no less.
Publicity is the great mor
disinfectant.
A Joke on Mark Twain.
The whole world will enjoy the
practical joke played on Mark
Twain, the humorist, whose
jokes, practical and otherwise,
have been at the expense of other
people.
Rdbert J. Collier, the New
York publisher, write to Mr.
Clemen's secretary a few days
before Christmas that he had ar
ranged to give the humorist an
elephant for a Christmas present.
He asked them to prepare a place
for it, and the family, unwilling
to risk any injury to Mr. Collier's
feelings, prepared to turn the
o garage into elephant quarters.
A few days later a load of hay
a was received. with the compli
3 ments of Mr. Collier, who sent
word it was for the elephant to
eat. Next came a man who in
- troduced himself as Prof. May,
4a professional elephant trainer,
who caused the garage floor to be
o strenghtened. The elephant ar
is rived at night and when Mr.
', Clemens went to view his gift he
discovered in the garage a paper
. elephant about as big as a full
. grown cow. L

The Newspaper Guy.
I see a man pushing his way through
the lines.
Of cops where the work of the "fire
fiend" shines.
"The chief?" I inquire-but a man re
plies:
"Oh, no! Why, that's one of those
newspaper guys.
I see a man walk through the door of
a show.
Where great throngs are blocked by
the sign "S. R. O."
"Is this man the star that no ticket
he buys?"
"Star nothing! He's one of those
newspaper guys."
I see a man start on the trail of a
crook.
And he scorns the police, but he
brings him to book.
"Sherlock Holmes?" I inquire-some
one scornfully cries:
"Sherlock H-! Naw, he's one of
dese newspaper guys."
And some day I'll pass by the great
"Gates of Gold."
And see a man pass through unques
tioned and bold.
"A saint" I'll ask, and old Peter'll
reply,
S"No; he carries a pass-he's a news
paper guy."
Arbor and Bird Day will be
on Jan 15 for the public schools
of Louisiana. On that day the
s children of each school will plant
,. a tree and learn a lesson about
birds, than which there are few
. more desirable things for chil
d dren to do.

New Orleans and Baton Rouge
are advertised in the Chicago
papers Sunday. The Old South
will wake up yet.
Didn't last week seem as if it
had two Sundays.
What happened to Castro cer

"When the cat's away, the mice
