Improved Fire Extinguisher.
It is not at all difficult to extinguish
t fire if it can be detected in its in
Aiplercy, but if it has had an oppor
lunity to burn for a short time it is
1 task requiring a company of fire
men and a deluge of water. Were
it possible to find a blaze at its be
ginning there would be no need to
maintain paid'fire. departments in all
the large cities and Insurance com
panies would go out of business for
ack of patronage. But many fires
egin when no one is near and are
oct discovered until the headway is
:oo great for one man to fight. Con
sequently it is customary to equip
3uildings liable to fires wfth auto
matic sprinklers, providing an ar
:angement which will empty the con
:ents of a large tank of water through
a series of pipes to drench the vicin
ity of the blaze. The water is turned
an by the fusing of a soft metal plug
under the action of the heat from
the blaze or by means of a thermos
tat, which works automatically when
the temperature rises to a predeter
mined degree, regardless of proximity
to the blaze itself.
The invention shown in the draw
ing is operated by the proximity of
heat to the automatic release, but it
has a different method of extinguish
ing a fire than that used by the water
sprinkler. The extinguishing agent is
contained in a fragile globe, which iJ

fire is liable to occur. As soon as the
heat causes its release and the globe
falls to the floor a sliding hammer in
the interior explodes the sphere and
scatters the fire-quenching powder
broadcast, at the same time making
noise enough to alarm anyone within
the building. This extinguisher can
be suspended at any point, without
connection with any other apparatus,
working independently in accomplish
ing its purpose, while at the same
time it can be thrown by the hand
should the fire be discovered before
it drops of its own.accord.

Declination of the Magnetic Needle.
The geographical meridian of a
place in the imaginary plane passing
through this place and the two terres
trial poles, and the meridian is the
outline of the plane upon the surface
of the globe. Siniilarily the magnetic
meridian if a place is the vertical
plane passing at this place through
the. two poles of a movable magnetic
needle. Is general the magnetic meri
dian does not coincide with the geo
graphical meridian, and the angle
which the magnetic meridian makes
with the geographical meridian-that
is to say, the-angle which the direc
tion of the needle makes with the
meridian-is called the declination or
variation of the magnetic needle. The
declination is said to be east or west,
according as the north pole of the
needle is east or west of the geogra
phical meridian. The declination of
the magnetic needle, which varies in
different places, is at present west in
Europe and in Africa, but east in Asia
and in the greater part of North and
South America. It shows further con
siderable variations even in the same
place; these variations are of two
kinds, some are regular and are secu
lar, annual or diurnal: and others are
irregular and are called magnetic
storms. The magnetic dleclination of
any place may be determined when
its astronomical meridian is known
by means of the instrument known as
the declination compass.
Electric Furnaces.
Among the most successful Euro
pean metallurgists who have intro
duced electric furnace methods into
the metallurgy of iron and steel, says
the Electrical World and Engineer, is
C. A. Keller of Paris.whose steel proo
ess is in use at Kerrousse, in the
Houille Blanche ("white coal") dis
trict. It has recently been stated that
Messrs. Keller, Leleux & Co., are con
templating a steel works in this coun
try. For this reason a patent granted
March 15 to C. A. Keller is of special
interest. He uses a double furnace,.
the upper furnace for the reduction of
the metal, while the lower furnace
set ves for refining or alloying pur
poses. The upper furnace is character
ized by the continuity of its operation
and the possibility of the utilization
of a great power and great capacity.

How to Keep House.
With all the luxuries and pleasures
of this life. its big enjoyments and its
smaller comforts, there is an offset or
antithesis which we have to contend
with in the form of aches and pains.
In some way and by some means
every one has a touch of them in
some form at some time. Trifling as
some of them may be, the risk is
that they will grow' to something
greater and rack the system with con
stant torture. There is nothing, there

right to trifle with. Taken in time.
the worst forms of pains and aches

IRON AND STEEL PRODUCTION.
Comparisons That Give an idea of Its
Magnitude.
To realize the magnitude of the
production of iron aid steel in this
country during one year, one has to
employ much larger standards of com
parison than pounds and tons. For
instance a blast furnace large enough
to receive at one charge all the metal
that passes through all the blast fur
naces of the country in one year
would have to be built to contain
2.,000.000,000 cubic feet. Or to use
the slightly more conceivable compar
ison, It would have to be twenty-four
times as large as the great pyramid of
Cheops. The coke used in the process
of manufacture would, if piled up in
a column 400 feet square, reach 6,500
feet up into the skies, and the iron
ore from which all the products are
made, would, if piled up in a column
one-fourth of the bulk of that coke,
reach just as high as the former-
some 34,636,121 tons. If all the car
rails were rolled into one huge rail,
the dimenasion would be 1 1-5 miles
long, 81 feet high, 81 feet across the
base, and 48 feet across at the top,
being wide enough to accommodate a
.locomotive and its tender. One huge
wire nail contaming the metal an
nur.lly drawn into such a form would
make a column 1.000 feet high and 54
feet square, overtopping the renowned
Eiffel Tower at Parts. The cut nails
would reach to the heights of the
Washington monument, and would far
overtop the Park Row building, the
highest in the world.
Hope On.
There was never a day so misty and gray
That the blue was not somewhere qbove
It:
There is never a mountain top. ever so
bleak.
That some little flower does not love it
There was never a night so dreary and
dark
That the stars were not somewhere
shining:
There is never a cloud so heavy and
black
That it has not a silvery lining.
'There is never a waiting-time, weary and
long.
That will not sometinme have an ending:
The most beautiful part of the landscape
is where
The sunshine and shadows are blending.
Into every life some shadows will fall.
But Heaven sends the lnshblne of love:
Through the rifts in tle ,clouds we may
if we will.
See the beautiful blue s',ove.
Then let us hope on though the way be
long
And the. darkness be gathering fast:
For the turn in the road is a little way
on
Where the home-lights will greet us at
last.
