says he is going to put out a rice
crop there this spring.
Mr. and Mrs. H. E Wesson and
little daughter Ella, who have been
up at the Barbreck plantation for
some time, arrived in Welsh Sun
day and expect to remain here un
til the latter part of the week. Mr.
Wesson says work is progressing
nicely on the plantation; that the
good weather is enabling his force
to get the ground in excellent shape
for the crops.
Mrs. Dr. Chapman chaperoned a
charming crowd of young ladies,
consisting of Misses May Dautel,
Olie Bolton and Eldia Goodreau
on a pleasure trip to Lake
Charles Saturday, attending the
basket ball game and enjoying
the pleasant sights of Lake Charles.
Dr. Chapman went over on No. 9
in the evening and escorted the
ladies home on the midnight train.
Prosper Verrette of Hayes, the
efficient police juror of ward nine,
was a business visitor in Welsh,
Monday. Mr. Verrette gives it as
his opinion that there will be a ma
terial decrease in the acreage of
rice sown in his locality this year,
as compared to what was sown last
year He is also of the opinion
that diversification in tarming, is
one of the essentials, in order to
insure that degree of prosperity
that this country is rightfully en
titled to expect.
Mrs. Lee Ketch and family, con
sisting of her daughter, Miss Mar
garet Bovelle and her son George,
started Tuesday morning for Dix,
Nebraska, where they will make
their home in future. The Ketches
have been residents of Welsh for a
number of years, and have always
taken an active part in religious
and educational work of the com

real loss to the community, and
especially to the religious and so
cial circle in which they have been
affiliating.

day, on account of his brother-in
law, Wm.,Bridges, who suffered a
stroke of paralysis a short time
since, having taken a relapse. Mr.
Bridges had been up and about, to
some extent, having gone down
town Saturday, but the relapse is
so serious as to confine him to his
bed, and (leaves him in as bad
shape, or worse. than he was at
the beginning of his illness. The
doctors say there is still some hope
of his ultimate recovery, although
his case is most serious.
Notice to Horsemen.

bred harness stallion, owned by C. A.
Saxby, will make the present season
at the barn on the old H. E. Wesson
place, in the northeast part of Welsh.
Flood Wilks is well known in this
section of the parish, having many of
as fine colts as can he found in the
parish. Horsemen are cordially in
vited to come and examinel the horse
and inspect some of his colts.

A Word from Rey. A. A. B. Welch Relat.
lye to Sorghum Seed.
The following communication from
Rev. A. B. Welsh. formerly of this
city, but now pleasantly located in
Aspermont, Texas, will be of interest
to most of our readers, on account of
their friendly regard for Rev. Welch
and family, and to a number who
have been making inquiries regarding
the kind of sorghum that is being
raised in Texas, and the source of
seed supply.
"I have not forgotten about my
promise to write you in reference to
the sorghum I was talking to you
about, when I was there, but many
duties has caused delay in writing.
The name of the cane is 'Red Top,'
and I notice in a market quotation
before me, that Pitman and Harrison
Co., of Sherman, Texas, have it for
sale at $3.30 per hundred-weight. If
you have the address of any seed
house in Dallas for Ft. Worth, you
can doubtless get it there also, I
would be glad if you would ask Mr.
Read to publish as much of this as
will be necessary, as there were a
number, who asked me to write to
them and tell them what kind of cane
it was and where they could get the
seed. I think it will be of general in.
terest to the readers of the paper."
The Whale Drew Big Crowd Sunday.
The whale at Port Arthur continued
being a drawing card last week, cul.
minating in a grand exodus of people
living along connecting lines to Port
Arthur, last Sunday, when a rate of
$1.1'0 for the round trip was put on
from Welsh, with similar reductions
from other points. The rush at the
window for tickets Sunday mornini
was almost equal to Ithat which oc
curs when some of the great circuses
are displaying world wonders at Lake
Charles.
More than usual interest has been i
aroused in whales in general and
this one in particular, on account of
the diverse opinions held by those,
who had viewed the monster, as to
which way its tail worked, whether
like that of the ordinary fish, or like
that of the lobster. To such p degree

did the difference of opinion run in
this respect, that a number of bets
were made on the question, the largest
being $100. It is safe to say that
more time was spent in the study of
the physical make up of the whale, as

has been consumed on the same sub
