I,. RIEAD, EDITOR. Relative to the division of Calca sieu parish, the division papers of tile paih nite ak it t1 a1 irutd stand play upion the action of the re cent parish di vision convention representing the will of the people. Now this is all tommnv-rot, antd there is not a uell informed tman in the parish hut thlat knnows it. T'lhere is 1io oner wh is etven half wrt~ familiar with the condtitions that exist in ('al casien parish, but that knows that the dliviioln of the ar'ish on the lproposed lines is in no, sernse the will of the Ipeopl, antd that. should G(\ov. Hall he as failr to the poeo-le ats was (ov.. S tnd(,s., :mol '1uilmit the pro posed division to a referentum ivote the qutestitt of division woult lbe tie feated byv an overwhteling majttrity. (Our t'eprles't!iitive knew tits. when lihe stated in his opening address to the cotiVetioll that it wtould he im p'ss:ible ti deci.1e on a set of lites ultion which the parish could be divid el if left to a tvote of the ipeoplle. The delegtttes, i !unv otf whottm were in structed to oppose division if there was any cliance to oppos))e it inl the conveution, know it, and everyone who is familiart with the refetenitmii vote on the subject less than two years ago, knows that the peoplle expressed in tno uncertain terms their ot)position to division. The action of the conrc(ution in adopting the lines sutimitted to the conventioni does not represent the will of the I)eople, hut it does representt the will of a few politicial schemers and wire-pull ers of a few of the townis of t)he par ish which hope to be benefitted by division. In his telegraphic appeal to ('ali forni, for their su,)poutt at the State presidential p)rimtaryv eldi 'lt'uesdav, President Taft very adroitly reminds them of their obliigation to suppolrt him, because of thie part he )payed in secutri,.ot the P!uaniea , !:xl,)ositi() for 1 California, rather than ttLouisiaat. While it is generally conceded that it is largely due tl tihe activity of P'resi dent Taft that the expositiolt went to jt the west rather than t tithe soiuth, we are surprised' that he slhoutld o!Ter it I as a reason for demanldtng the vote of the state. If Califolrnia is indebted to the president for the exhtosition to the ' extent that she should give him her support in thie National Cou\nvetion, why, by the same token, shoul not I Louisiana detinv hiim hert suoltortt on the ground that byv not keepligl hands t off hIe robbed them of thte exulosition., i 'The parish division convtention at Lake Charles held last Saturday Isd t the carving knife with aritistic elfect f on poor ol0 Calcasieu and when the P legislature endorses its action she will C look like a wreck of her former self. i The western boundarv ' of the new I parish which will take in Lake Arthur t cossists of a series of connected W straight and crooked lines whichi will d require a full load of ''tangle foot" b to follow with certatinty. A drutnk man on a blind horse in a dark night it would be about as certain of his lear- .i ings as he would ot a tr.p up ti Nezpique.--Lako Arthur Herald. M If anybody had told Jennings tenal years ago that she woulh obtain par- in ish division only with the help of to Lake Charles, she woultln't hlave be- it lieved it. And neither would Lake Charles, says the American.ptess.os And if anybod v had told Lake Charles n a year and a half ago, when she was spending hundreds of dollars and an sending out her best men to defeat tlt Parish Division, that within two years se for purely mercenary reasons she would be lined uD tighting for ett division, they would have been ac cused of baving patronized Lake Charles blind tigers too freely. cor ent A colored man, brought before a for police judge, charged with stealing clu cbhickens, pleaded guilty andi receiv-ed rece sentence, when the judge asked how Me r it was he managed to lift those clhick. lii ens' right under the window of the owner's house when there was a dog in the yard. Incidentally, all those new olfices for the three new parishes ought to be a uighty good thing for the tired JtCE. citizens who wish to earn their living --- without any great a mounl of labor.' We don't pose as a prophet, nor as the son of a prophet, and especial ly on matters of as (doubtful a charac ter as that of thechoiec of presidential candidates, and vet we cannot forbear the reflection that it looks a good deal as though "history is going to repeat itself" and the two old party' standard l ea- Bearers may be Itoosevelt and Biryan. s of Users of tOblacco c'iiinot in the f1i ture hold seats in the general con 'C,- ference of the Methodist church.
