Each promising to raise food to help win the war. The state department of education will send an agent at the proper time to assist the club members in canning vegetables and general help around the homes. It will help to save food and will give our colored population a much needed training in house keeping. The person that counts today is the one who knows how to do. VanNess l, Louisiana. Louisi~~ana eVn esI The Independence of Women. The war has made it possible and at the same time necessary for an increas lng nu E ber of women to become inde pendent commercially. A large number of excellent positions have been made vacant by young men drafted, or volun teering for military service. In most cases, there are not available unem* te ployed men to fill these vacancies. In f addition to these openings, new de s partments have been created in govern t ment work, requiring thousands of ad. c. ditional employes, a large per cent of whom must necessarily be women Under such conditions, uny ambitious to young woman will win her indepen dence as surely as she will put forth the effort. e The call of the government is an ad. ditional incentive for patriotic women e to come forward to do their part. d, Women are just as necessary in large 1e numbers to carry on the work of the a war at home as are the men on the )d fields of battle, Many a woman whose a husband or brother is in active service 9 has taken up work for the government .e at home for his sake, as well as for her in country's sake. The women of Ameri(a id have responded nobly to the urgent le call to help lighten the burden on tl e .h men in the field. The commercial schools of America have never before received such enor* mous patronage from the young ladies as they are receiving now. Commer. cial education for women makes it pcs. sible for them to render the assistarce . expected of them. Get this commercial training and let Uncle Sam decide where he needs you most. He must have h stenographers, bookkeepers, telegraph operators, typists and accountants in great numbers, and it is left to the ac. tion of the great multitude of young women to supply this need. Numbers of Tyler Commercial college graduates have gone directly into government positions at Washington or elsewhere, while others are working with the e boards in their home towns. This has proven to be a period ot great awakening. Women have pressed r forward forward in the field of business so that their services, offered to the I government at this time, are indeed r valuale The only respect in which they lack complete response is in numnbers. You are one who should join their - ranks and help them support the stand. ard of American womanhood. The situ. ation calls for action. Make the start at once by securing the training which will qualify you for service. Mail us your name and address on the blank form below for our free catalog. N am e.... . . . . . . . . . . . . . Because a thorough business education, with shorthand and typewriting, gives the greatest guarantee of success. You must make a LIVING whether you want to or not. The right kind of a business education gives the surest means of acquiring the former, and the easiest way to make the latter. Because its faculty greets its audience each morning with interest so vital, purposes so useful, originality so varied, ideas so new, fresh and bountiful that each day's work is a performance possible only to such co-operative forces. 8 Because the methods employed in both the COMMER CIAL AND SHORTHAND departments are simple, easy, fascinating, and the time required to master them is about Sone-half the time it takes to half-way master the old systems. Because we conduct a FREE EMPLOYMENT depart ment and have an experienced man to devote his time to that work alone. 8 Spencer Business College St. Charles and Common Sts., New Orleans SFAUGHT LUIBER CO., Ltd. r Climatic Brand 1 House Paint...
