Parish Agent Discusses Plan of Trip Through Dairy Sections of the North. The following letter from Parish Demonstration Agent H. C. Fondren, is self explanatory: Jennings, La., Mar. 10, 1920. Editor Rice Belt Journal: Mr. T. H. Harris, who was one of the party of Louisianians visiting the livestock and dairy sections of Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa last summer, was so impressed with what he saw and the manner in which the whole system of agriculture is conducted through these states that he at once set about a plan by which several hundred earn est Louisiana boys could visit that section this summer. MIr. Harris' plan is to leave New Orleans about August first with a full quota of boys from each parish, spend ing two weeks visiting farms, dairy and beef type herds as well as sliheer and swine herds. Corn, wheat, alfalfa oats, timothy, and other farm crops will be studied. A two days' visit to the National Dairy Show at Chicago and the National stock yards will be a part of the tour. Each parish agent is asked to pro vide a list of boys and the necessary funds for their expenses. In discus sing with Mr. Harris the number of boys to be sent from each parish he said, "the sky is the limit." "You provide the boys and we'll take care of them." I think we could well afford to send 2t, to 25 boys. It is estimated that it will cost $150.00 for each boy and ' think we could arrange to defray half the expense of the two boys from each ward, making 18 boys at a cost of $1,350.00. Two farmers have already volunteered to send their boys, pay ing all expenses, and with a few more to fall into line I am sure we can count on 25 boys from Jefferson Davis par ish. There is no better bit of educatior that could be given our boys than this trip, the value of which cannot be com inted, and it comes at a time when farm work is at its slackest period thus interfering very little with those whose labor is needed on the ;arm. No parent could possibly give his boy a more pleasant and profitable vaca tion than this. No definite plan has been decided on as to what boys should go on this trip. but my plan would be to select two boys from each Ward to be benefici jes of the public fund which would be easily secured from the Police Ju ry, School Board, banks and other public spirited people, the selection tc be confined to boys who have shown a decided interest in agricultural mat ters and who are old enough to ap preciate the things they will see 'on the tour, We have made great strides in im proving our cattle and other live stock but we are sadly lacking yet in the care and management of all these. A trip of this kind, whereby 20 to 2. of our best and brightest boys are en abled to go and see, and study these NUCOA NUT MARGERINE-TRY A PACKAGE-AT CITY GROCERY. ..Long Term Loans at low rate of interest.
