Phanor Breazeale as a candidate for re-election to Congress from this, the Fourth, district. 'Mr. Breazeale-has represented ] this district in the National Con gr.-ss during the past six years aid there is no necessity for his I apologizing to his constituency for the record he has made. He is too well known for an intro- I duction to be necessary but it i will suftlice to say that he is going into the campaign now and to make a vigorous fight and will get acquainted with all the 1voters i', the district sufficiently to give tlihc an opportunity to give his I re::.tidacy favorable considera tion. There is no liklihood of the 4 present legislature redistricting the state with regard to the judi- 1 ciary, except the matter be left to the voters, and in that case the change would not take effect be fore the year 1908. The negro delegates wat large from Louisiana to the National Republican Convention at Chi- i cago were given seats in the con. rention instead of the lily white delegates. Now, will the lilies be rood? A correspondent of the De mrands says his section of Grant parish has white, black, yellow and copper colored people, all of the same instincts, but he says there is considerable difference in She "attiucts.9" The Shreveport Journal says the fact that theend of the world is rapidly approaching is substan tiated in a great measure by, the1 refusal of a Loaisian s newspaper man to accept a $21,000 office. The following resolutions were adopted by the Louisiana State Medical Society at its last meet ing and a copy was sent to The Sentinel by Dr. I. E. Siess. We publish same with pleasures "Whereas, the Eve, Ear, Nose and throat Hospital af New Or leans is entirely dependlent for its maintainance on the generosity of the public, and that this charity is extended to the poor and sick irrespective of the parish or see ting from which they.come. "Whereas, the med'cal profes sion itself has derived material benefit, both from educational and other dire tions, since the foundation of the Institution, and its maintanence in the future direetly affects the interest of the professiou at large and moresoa ever the Institution needs the support of the profession in di recting the attention of the charitably inclined as well as that ofthe public spirited citizens, be it Resolved, That the members of the Louisiana State Medical society of this meeting, especially those who reside in the country parishes, believe that every effort should be directed to the contin dance of the cordial spirit between this Institution and the profes sion at large, and that the daily press, as well as the citizens of each parish, shall be earnestly in vited to influence their respective police juries to the end that they may direct a liberal annual don tion in favor of thischarity. It will be seen that this insti tution is dependent on the public for its maintanence, and, as many sufferersfrom this, Winn parish, have received, and many more are at liberty to receive treatment at the institution, it would be a wise, and very necessary thing, for the police jury of this parish to make a suitable appropriation for same. We hope to see. the matter receive proper attention. at an early date. The congressional fight will now begin to warm up. Tfriumphs of -odern Suargery. An Awful Tragedy. Nearly fifteen hundred persons met a horr:ible death last Wedn esday in the burning of an excur sion steamer in the East river near the entrance of Long Island Sound. It was an excursion of Sunday school children of St. Mark's Germun Lutheran church. Four hundthred and eighty-three bodies were recovered froml the destroyed vessel, burned to dealth or drownedi. Many haIl been washedl ashore, having jumnped tfor their lives from the burnling steamer. Such cata.tr.olIhes are too horrible to) d escrihe and niore words connot express the heart rending scenes whiich follow such terrible trag,'edies. Da Costa, the noted: Philadelphia physician, was, even in his college days, a hard worker and; a serious minded youth, says an ex change. While he was reading medicine at the Jefferson college young Da Cos ta upon one occasion attended a ball. lie did not enjoy this ball very much. He would rather have been at home it work. lie wandered here and there among the gay crowd, looking lonely and bored. - Perceiving his plight, his hostess took. him in hand. She compliment ed him on his success as a student, but she urged him at the same time to nfingle now and then in the gay eties that are natural to youth. Then, pointing to the sets that were forming in the ballroom, she asked, "Won't you come and dance the lancers ?' "Yes, I suppose so, thanks," said the young man. "Really, though,. he added ruefully, "I think I am more fitted to lance the dancers." Overcometh All Things. The late Dan Daly. whenever he was idle in New York. had a great habit of attending Salvation Army meetings. lie believed in the Sal vation Army, and he contributed lib I ' =yi w. s"` "NaLLL..ux r aoraeD cTurrO CPAN. erally to its support. Sometimes, too, he had interesting things to tell about it, says the New York Times. One evening, rather late, Daly and a commercial traveler entered the Fifth Avenue hotel together. Daly, with a nod toward his com panion, said: "My friend and I were at a meet ing of the army tonight. The cap tain, after his address, passed through the audience .questioning the people. Coming to my friend, he said: "'What is your business, sir?' "`I am a commercial traveler,' was the answer. "'And are you saved? "'Oh, I'm all right.' "At this reply the captain, turn ing to the congregation, shouted in a loud voice: "'Halleluial A commercial trav eler saved. He can save to the ut termost' " The Age of Dincretkoe. Senator Quay and a friend were recently discussing the doings of a rather gay youth living in Harris burg, with whose family both Mr. Quay and his friend are well ac quainted. The friend was disposed to be se vere in his criticism of the young ster's conduct, but the senato smil ingly remarked that as the boy was all right at heart it would be well to reserve judgment and give- him a chance, and he added that he thought the lad "would pull up when he reached the age of discre tion." 'True rejoined Mr. Quay's friend, "but what would you cal the age of discretion ?" "As a rule," answered the senator, 'I should say that a young fellow has reached the. age of discretion when he removes from his dialls the pictures of actresses and substitutes there a pArtrait of his wealthy, bach"eo =i Blahop Dudiey'. Deleate Rebuke. The late Bishop Dudley of Ken tucky could administer a rebuke delicath, .a on occasions he took eat to ae that the point was plain.
