He fEl the plmt.r, , He was s , I-erser etafts speech of a visitble iensesahid _ -.., -; WILLIAM 1J0AllW0 ImA1. The Democratic nomineelor the presidency is a remarkable man in many respects. Undoubtedly his personality is known more thoroughly throughout the civil ized world than that of any other American citizen. He s an orator of pronounced ability and persua sire eloquence. He is a deep thinker. He is a constant reader. lie is the thoughtful student of great governmental principles and policies: lie is outspoken and fearless in his utterances. tie is honest and conscientious. Above all else he is a christian gentle man. In his relation to the great masses of the American citizen, he is what he proclaims himseif a commoner. He is the champion of the rights ot the people. He stands as the bulwask and expor ent ot the laboring classes against the encroachments of predatory wealth. lie is the embodiment of pu'rit) in American politics. He is the defender of right against the en croachment of consciencele-s wrong. He is a patriot in the full meaning of the word. He is the champion of the guaranteed con ýtitutional rights of the people. lie stands as the.embodiment of truth, honesty and fair dealing. Believing in a principle, he openly and fearlessly proclaims it and defends it. Since his nomin ation he has fully e'ndorsed the eninciations embodied in the Democratic platform. Nay, more. He is forcing his Republican op ponent, W. H. Taft, to follow int his wake in embracing some of the most pronounced policies of the Democratic declarations. Mr. raft may not mean what he says, none the less when Mr. Bryan's utterances on great questions ol public importance are published. he drops into line with "Me, Too" declaration. The Democratic party is enthus iastic, united, hopeful. With such an alignment as at present shown. mnd such a leader, its triumph seems almost an assured fact. The slogan of the day is "Bryan and Victory." TYAM' SFEECIES. If any one wishes to hear W. J. Bryan talk, all that is necessary is to send for some of the phono graph plates which his oratiors have punctured and set them whirling. He has prepared a number of speeches in this man ner to be used during the cam paign. Without doubt Bryan will hddress the citizens of Winnfield lefore the campaign is eqded. Such an exhibition would prove a drawing attraction. SUE EE n. Despite the impressions of out "Northern cousins" to the con trary, Louisiana is the garden spot of this continent. Its sons are courageois, industrious and patriotic; its daughters gloriously lovely, refined and industrious; itt soil rich, fertile and productive. and its Bowers regal, beautiful and fragrant beyond all comparison; its climate salubrious, and its Italian skies bend low with the azure hue of incomparable loveli fess. If times are not growing better, the period is not far distant whet they will improve. The crop sea son is coming on apace, and it is already beiug harvested. Husiness will revive in every channel anit a new impetus will be given the various pursuits of men. Life is varied in its several ages, and is but the reflex of the seasons of earth. Prosperity and adves.ity have always marked its recaning years from time immemoriaL It is one of nature's. . table laws. w. F. It would be superfluous for us to try to introduce him to the voters of ward one. lie has served in that capacity for the past four years and his action speaks loudci than any encomiums we might add. MISREPRESENTATION. It is a little remarkable that a man like Tom Waton.. in hi.. opening speech of his campaign, should revamp charges against William J. Bryan that the great Copimoner has already denied as containing no scintella of truth. Hillingsgate and abuse are not the weapons to appeal to the judgment and sound sense of the American sovereigns. The presidential cam paign §hould be conducted on a plane of dignity and reason :om niensurate with the high charactci of the position. The intelligent masses will not be s,'ayed by the impassioned utterances of the demagogue or the specious pleas of the professional politician. Last week we received a press ing invitation from Mr. M. Tansey to take (dinner with him at his camp on the Rochelle branch of the Tremont & Gulf Railway. On Saturday the engine and caboose fro.n the camp came in and we left Winnfield at 10:30. Arriving at the camp at Collins station where Messrs. Pete Fer guson, Mack McGrath and W'ebh Burrage hold forth, we stopped for dinner. We found comnfort ably located in the camp ears, Mrs. Webb Burrage and her sister. Mass One Teddlie. Dinner being announced we were ushered into the dining car, and such a dinner. We could go over the courses and enumerate the various dishes, but will leave that to your imagination. We will, however, say that they have a "chef du cuisine" that would :(o well for some of the first class hotels to get. The cooking was of the best and served in elegant style. After dinner our party separated; some to fish and some to visit the work of surfacing the track. The recent rains made the water too muoddy for fish. We spent the night at Collins station, where we partoofk of the hospitality of Mr. andt Mrs. Burraae. ' Next morning we took the train and went to the end of the laid track where we were met by a team sent by Mr. Tanmey. We soon were carried to the camp which is a veritable town under enavas. The corral for the stock is a huge canvau f capable of holding more than a hundred head of stock. The commissary. olice and sitting room is saother large teat, where we met our genial best and enjoyed ourselves until the triangle sounded for dinner. We were ushered into a large tent where two long ttbles were spread antd one would have c.ncluded that this was a special occasion, but we boon found that Mr. Tansey was fond of good living, and was a judge of good oapking and that he, too, had a e'gef that was far above the average. Last Milodaty night a new oil company was organized in ýWinn tih.hl, the charter of which was filed Tuesday amnI appears in this issue of The Sentinel. Owing to the fact that the Pace Oil Cuompany had withdrawn its stock from the market and the prospects of an eat ly completion of the Pace oil well, the incor porators of this company decided to put up a new rig anti commence drilling on tile land retently acquired fromi Capt. I. L. Lyons by Mr. Pace. The Central Oil Company will have some of their stock for sale, but will not sell for less than par. Mr. L. 11. Baldwin will have the active management of the drilling of the new well and the sale of the stock. The new derrick will be erected in a few Clays and drilling will commence 1is soon as tile machinery can be shippedr and placed in position. Considerable interest Is being mmanifeste'd in the Winnfield oil field now. We understand that other rigs will be put in operation on other holdings in the territory. We heardl an experienced oil well man say, recently, that he would not be surprised to see a gusberat the P:.co well in the next ten or ifteen days, 9o those who are not on, had better get on because when we get oil it will be too late then to catch the car.
