Our Grammar School.
We had the pleasure of attend
ing one of the fortnightly exercis
es of the public school in this city
last Friday morning, and was sur
prised to see the large attendance
of pupils and the excellent work
being clone by them.
The principal, Miss Lesa Payne,
is an experienced and well-qualified
teacher. and takes much interest
in her profession, while her two
assistants, Mliss Kate Lee Trichel
and Miss Mattie Ilyams, are able
seconds in the good work the trio
are doing.
But the school is sadly in need
of seats and desks, of which there Ia
i; not a lirst class one in the louse. th
Rickety old remnants of better at
days, roo(dls-hoxes turned upside It
down, rude tables made with a dull tit
hatchet by the ipupils, and a plain al
board edged arainst the wall ur.- ct
(cr the window, where the light le
will fall in the eyes instead of over at
the shoulders, are some of the
make-shifts for desks with which tE
the teachers have to contend and tC
the children to suffer. I
i his condition of affairs in the In
largest nublic school in the parish, Si
is a crying slam,"e. 1
We have gloried over our great is
Normal, which is indeed "a thing,
of beauty and a joy forever," andt s
have entirely lost sight of a more c(
important school to us and our
children.
The practice department of the tao
Normal is full to overflowing, and fi
the one hundred and fifty or moret-c
children dlepondent upon the Gram- tt
mar School cannot hope to reach
the Normal until they have acquir- o
ed the rudiments of an education, V
anti passed the ages of 15 and It;
years.
So let's build up our Grammar
School. The building presents a
heat appearance from the outside,
thanks to the efforts of former
Principal Greneaux, while most of
the inside walls have been rlepaint
e(1, and blackbol)ards reslated by
the present energetic Principal,
but no satisfactory work can be
done until each room is supplied
with seats ant desks. This is too
much for the school to undertake
without the aid of its patrons and
the entire city.
We have one child of school ago
. and it attends the Normal, but we
are as much interested as any one,
from a progressive standpoint.

L. R. Burnside who kept a re

SMardi Gras, antd a week or ten
days later, so we hear, wrote to his
wife to look out for herself as he
(lid not intend toreturn, It is al
so rumored that he had spent about
$ 1000 of her money in his busi
fness, the proceeds of which he
'e pocketed before leaving. We have
been fearing something like this
ever since he "beat" this paper
Sout of some little bills. The only

Our Normal Groxws.
Monday was the first day of the
last terni of the present session of
the State Normal School, and the
attendance was increased Iby a
number of new pupils. The ,zra:l
uating class of IS, whom we have
already mentioned as having pass
ed the examinations,, took their
leave, hut their places were tilled
and more by the new comers.
A few in each class, and a, hi.hi
as 25 per cent in one class failed
to pass up to the next gradi( and
will have to spend another 4 mionth;·
in the old class, which goes ta,
show that progress in the Normt:ia
implies hard work, andt prolnotion
is made strictly on merit.
The boarding caplacity of the
school for young ladies is now t: x
edl to its utmost. and still they come.
We hope the approaching se.s
sion of the legislature will make ,
ample provision for this grave de
ticiency, as well as protect all the
other interests of this great insti
tution.
