"N hat is it?., "Why, a merchant announces in his l advertisements that si ice the number 13 hasa always lben regard'ed as an unlucky ntumber he will uncdertake the task of m eking it a lucky number. In order to do this i,' advertises that to every thir teen customer who pays cash he will give the full value of his purchase. Of ti course nob,.ly is permitted to know how a many have purchased ahead of him. He must pay his mary, and then the mer chant shows him the lits of sales made since the last prize was drawn. I tried it once'." *"Hlow did it pal out?" "I was going to tell you. It was when I first startal in business, anl: I thouagit l it would be a capital advetising sch,. ie ' for me. It ran along all right for about a week. and several pers. n got their pur chases free. Of course every one of them advertised my by teling it all over town, and I regarded it as the smartest scheme that had ever been hatched. One day I noticed oneof the town boys standing around the store, and for some time I thought nothing of it. But he stayed so long, and had so little apparent bh i ness there that I began to think he was keeping count of my sales and intended to jump in at the right time and get the prize. So I watehel the sakl* list an,: was considerably suprisid when nnlnhe" 12 had made his purchase that this fel low didn't make any movement. "He has miscounted." I said to myself and stooped under the counter to smile. as I thought how sick he would feel when he saw the nest customer walk off with the prize. Sure enough, a woman came in pretty soon and Ise:tght $1 worth of sugar, I which of cour-e. she got for nothing. 1 1 smiled a little toward the chap who had a been waiting all the time,'ut he never let on. le h ad just walked up. bought adime's worth of winter green loze'nge, and walked away. No 'sooner hadl h, turned away than a friend of his hurrietl in and bought a nickel's worth of ,ome thing, and then another and another till a dozen of them had bought an aggre gate of less than $1 with me. Then came the 13th., laid down #10, said he'd take ;: barrel of sugar, a barrel of molasses and the rest in coffee. I was victimized, but I could not afford to go back on my pro position, so I delivered the goods and paid back the money. But I immediately hung out a sign saying that the propo sition had been withirawn. I was coca vinced by that time that the number was an unlucky number, a:,d that it might stay so till the end of time.-Chi cago News. Board of Trustees.
