'Cr A Coward Act. one of the rnost coward act ever per- a petrated in this town, took place Sun- r day night last. A brute under the dis- t guise of human being, too coward to re- 7j bel the mandate of his master-whiskey t -made a stand, took a Knightly air, and a deliberately opened his disastous fire upon his inoffensive victim-a lamp- 8 lately erected at the corner of the Con vent by the good Sisters. This noble Chevalier of Destruction, had the good sense to select as his victim, a poor un protected lamp, as there was certainly no danger of getting hurt by the Sisters. There are other lamps in town and which are much more brilliant than that of the Sisters which were left unmolested and why, because they knew, they would have been received in a manner that :heir bravery could not stand, if they had attempted their infernal work of destruction. The authorities should ferret out the perpetrator of this act and punish hint as he fully deserve. A Malicious Accusation. A negro namediCharles Jean who was charged with larceny, and who made his escape from the parish jail some months ago. by breaking a hole through the wall, was located and arrested by Sheriff Gardemal this week. The negro v when again caught. said be was released a by Jailer Eug. Bertrand, for the sum of one hubndred dollars, that he had paid Eighty five dollars cash, and had ti sent the balance, flfteen dollars to Mr. Bertrand by his brother. On being informed of the above, the l)istirct Attorney immediately filed an affidavit against Mr. Bertrand, and his case appeared before Judge Mouton Tuesdlay evening, when the brother de- s nied having brought any money to Mr. i Bertrand. ard all other evidences t brought before the court, proved in a clear manner that the negro had parju red himself. Mr. Bertrand was dischar. ged by the Court, there being not the least evidence against him, and the ne gro was remanded to jail to answer the charge of larceny, besides, the District Attorney has filed an affidavit against him foa perjury. Charles Jean again surprised the offi cers by breaking another hole through the wall with a spoon, and is now at - large enjoying his liberty. It is too warm in jail for that bird. t On the War Path. The past week. though nothing extra ordinary has happened, has been quite exciting. At the beginning of the week some iof the lsyv indulged in a little hard .tuff. and that comnbined with the heavy and ~.tltry weather, made it, in appear ance. exceedingly too warm for the Po lice o(licers, who claimed they were not paid enough for that hard work, resign ed, and left the town authorities in an interesting position. During the same week, rumors have been current that owing to a little difli cuulty which had occurred the Sunday previous between the white and colored boys at the baithing place, some of the colored umen of this town had been hold ing nightly meetings, inciting the negroes to raise a riot on Sunday last, if the white boys would dare go to the bathing place. And in consequence, the white boys had prepared themselves for any imergency, and on Sunday evening, ar med with Winchester Rifles, Breech loading shot guns, Revolvers and other war utensils, and gathered near the res idence of Mr. A. V. Flenring, but no de monstration was seen on the part of the negroes. The rumors were then consi dered as exagerated. The persons who were reported as be ling the leaders denied having any knowledge of the rumors, and said thItt no gathering for the purpose of inciting the negroes to riots was ever held in their presence or ever heard anything to that effect. His nose was badly cut, it is pre sumed by the shell, and his eyes severe ly burnt with powder. It Is to be hoped that his sight will not be affected, and that he will soon recover from his pain ul sufferings. Did You Ever? W. H. Revels. M. D., of Baltimore, Md., says: "I have been in the practice of medicine for over eighteen years, but t never have I seen the equal of Hodges' Sarsaparilla. The we. ther has been exceedingly warm the past week, and the chorusevery morning was "too warm to sleep. We understand that Gov. Nicblls is In a delicate position. and does not know how to make the appoints for police ju rors and assessor for this parish. Some candidates are elected by what is called to have been a primary election, and recommanded by the Proxy Parish Com mittee, while other candidates are strongly recommanded by numerously signed petitions. We believe it would f be best for the Governor to disregard all the recommandations and petitions which have been sent to him, and to or a primary election, and give every citi zen a nhance to become a candidate. I But the primary not to be conducted by wire pullers or politieians, but by the Democrats of this parish. No more po litical combinations. t Two Ways. Choose Which. There are two usual ways of doing I what nature sometimes does incomplete ly, namely, to relieve the bowels. Oneis to swallow a drastic purgative which evacuates profusely, abruptly and with pain, the other is to take Hoetetter's Sto mach Bitters, the effect of which is not violent, but sufficiently thorough, and which does not gripe the intestines. If the first is selected, the person employ ing it need not expect permanent bene fit, and he cannot hope to escape the de billating reaction which leaves the or gans as bad or worse off than before. If, on the other hand, he resorts to the Bit ters, he can rely upon the restoration of a regular habit of body, consequent upon a renewal of a healthful tore in the In testinal canal. Besides healthfully re lazing the bowels, the BitteIromse a dormant liver, imparts a benefcial impe tus to the Section of the kidheys, and counteracts the ealry twinges of rheu matism, a teendency to gout, and mhlaria in all its forms. A list has been left at this office, and those who have signed the apphcatlon for membership to the lodge of Kdights of Honor. whiheb will soon be organized here, are requested to come at once, sign the application for a lodge charter, and pay in their part of the charter fee, which is fixed at 05.25. We are Informed that our friend, Mr. I). l)ugas, Road Overseer, is having the roads of his distrclet put in first class condition. Why dent the Overseers of other sections follow Mr. i)ugas' exam ple) The Police Jury should see to thise, and force them to do so. I Told You so. Mr. R. A. Ireland, of Breen, Philips & C4o., Nashville, tenn., ss: "I was afllic ted with Piles for twenty years, and I trebti every renmedy offered me; finally used the Ethiopian Pile Ointment. It gave me instant relief, and has, effected a permanent cure." Sold by all drug gists. The Belle of Anderson Whiskey is the be't, Audibert keeps it. The Dudes Know it.
