S OI'FIcE AT ST. MARTINVILLI, Li. We understand that there were 4"i some opposition raised against the payment of Mr. Ben Potier for the keeping of the ferry at this place during the time the steel bridge was building; instead of receiving paymentwve believe he should be sued for damages for the ineffi cient way in which the ferry was kept, which on several occasions was such as to force the people to get in the cold water in order to reach the ferry. Mr. Potier gave so little attention to his contract that we do not believe he is enti tled to any payment at all. Mr. Gilbert Durand has shown a great deal of humanity on New Years morning, after driving his horse a short distance, coming to the early mass, he unfolded a blanket and covered the poor ani mal which was exposed to the cold north wind. We noticed and men tion this fact, because it is of rare occurence, so rare, that it is the first case that has come under our observation. Instead of humanity being practiced in this community towards the poor dumb animal * I that renders so much service, we - believe that cruelty is the order of 4 things. Not only that some poor de animals are worked hard under a 3 the stick, because their weak con- ci dition would not feel a whip, with- 5 fo Sout being fed, which look more ' i like standing skeletons than any S thing else. Generally the poor animals do pot receive the care they should in this section, and if a society for the prevention of cru elty was to be organized here, they would have lots of work to bring 4 all those who are cruel to the 4 dumb animal before the courts for 1 their cruelty. It is of a daily oc curance to see starving animals in 4 town under the saddle or in har ness. It is a shame and a dis- i 4 grace to the community, and we 3 hope that before long, some chari of table persons will look after the 0 good treatment of our domestic Id animals. A. C.
