The dle!ates to the ('Constitu tional convetntion should give up the idea of making a constitution, they lack the ability, honesty or pluck. Can it be possible that a lbody of men representing the entire people of a great state cannot frame a constitution because there are too many members rea dy to pass laws that are open and calculated to fraud? So monstrous have been the sections that were submitted in the suffrage bill by the committee that nothing is left of if after the honest element of the convention got through kicking at it. It is evident that there is a co terie of politicians in the conven tion who are ready to disregard their oath of office and resort to anything that will perpetuate their ýlss in power, but thank the lord there are some honest members in the convention, and upon them the eople depend for protection against such infamous laws as the understanding clause of South Ca rolina as was proposed by some Foster statesmen. If such a law is to be incorporated in the con stitution of the state it would be simpler and less expensive to the people, for the convention to sim ply say Foster will appoint the registrars and the registrars will elect Forter, or do whatever he tells them to do, and in this way save the expense of elections. The ring is evidently determin ed to engraft a clause in the con stitution that will allow fraud and manil)ulatin, which is the only hope of the dishonest politicians to remain in office. It would not be difficult to frame a suffrage clause if the idea was to make an honest law, and our idea would be to give the right of suffrage to all citizens of the Uni ted States who are twenty one years of age, owning in their own name property to the amount of 5800 or qualified by education, with a poll tax, the receipt of1 which should be exhibited before voting. According to statistics very fewr negroes would vote under this law. as the numbllier owning )ro- 1 perty and quallified iy education t is very simall ccinlared to, tlhe whites, and ill tlhe future the right of votimig \wouhl rest Illjinl thie peo pie theimselves. IecauIse they would be left to qualify tihem selves or not. and they wooulh have no one to ihlailue It their Ownii lazineFs or igtirtillnce. They do not call it any more the St. Martinville branch, Y- but the Aruaudville branch, neith ie er do they care about removing n the track between St. Martinville i? and Cade, but only want the con tinuation of the new road when it id reaches here, to New Iberia on a .il direct line. Well, we do not ºn blame our New Iberia friends to at make an effort to capture this per simon, it is certainly worth hav ing, but we believe it is too high for their pole, St. Martinville holds the longer pole, and in the course of a short time our impor tance will be great enough to re tain the branch even if we do not surpass New Iberia in commercial importance.
