The reunion of the Confederate veterans has come and gone and twenty thousands "rebs" are to day speeding to their homes with their minds filled with the most delightful recollections of recent - experiences. In Atlanta, as in every Southern city, there was a perfect plethora of hospitality. The old fighters were honored with the unremitting attehtion of the citizens of the place, and the - Atlanta ladies vied with each other )S in their effort to provide social en tertainment for the grey and griz zled veterans. It was a glorious time, and the reunion of 1898 will C. be remembered as long as the hearts of its favored participants continue to beat. It was unfortunate that the ac- 1 commodations at Atlanta should have been so limited, but this was - unavoidable. The influx of twen ty thousand strangers was more he than the citizens of the place were prepared for and many of the ve th terans had to submit to inconve st. niences during their stay. The ad Atlantans were so constant in fur- their attentions, however, so soli citous of the welfare and comfort ( of thetr guests, that the veterans had not the heart to complain. It is to be hoped though, that the Pa- city of Charleston, which has se ! cured the next encampment, will profit by the lesson taught at At lanta. The old vets suffered so bitterly, t and withal so uncomplainingly in t the long ago that they are entitled t to comfort now. The rising gen- c eration, the sons and grandsons of c those hardy and valiant men, owe i it to themselves to see that their v grey hairs go down in happiness e to the grave. They have played a their part in life's great tragedy; it they must have rest and comfort b . and contentment now. a Persons troubled with diarrhoea will be interestetfin the experience of Mr. W. M. Bush, clerk of Hotel Dorrance. Provi dence, R. I. He saves: "For several years 0 I have been almost a constant sufferer v from diarrhoea, the frequent attacks p completely prostrating me and render iug me unfit for my duties at this hotel. About two years ago a traveling sales man kindly gave me a small bottle of a Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarr- n hoea Remedy. Much to my surprise and tj delight its effects were immediate. Whenever I feltsvmptoms of the disease I would fortify myself agaiust the at- r or tack with a few doses of this valuable h1 by remedy. The result has been very satis- a m factory and almost complete relief from rt the affliction." For sale by T. J. Labbe. tI u MARK HANNA AGAIN. V Statee. Mark Hanna, who has been senaf b fed out by the war excitement, is i trying to force himself into public notice again. In a recent inter view at Cleveland he made the fol- ri lowing lying statement: "The conduct of the Democra- - tic party in the present war has been unpatriotic and the party has no claim to the confidence of ta the people. If the Democratic n party finally manages to get toge- c ther it will be on the issue of so called anti-McKinleyism. In the tri Senate and House the party is de- so moralized on the question of a wi new policy. Their party brought co on the war and then refused to f vote for revenue to enforce it. They are floundering about in the do muddy sea of uncertainty." it Thus spoke a man who attained bu his seat in the United States Se- tr nate by thonost unblushing cor- ne rapti.pdll very word he utter- it 1 ed waas I,~ ':lianoa, as well as we the counir*k ws that the De- up mocratass tmiformly for the mV war meas alu duced by the by Republican in in the House, atJd miany o asures tesre thw permitted to gij gh under the vt stress of circ u s although nOt the Demccraet few they co- was -i~~·; n. vered corrupt jobs and schemes and involved principles of govern rate ment, which their party had con and sistently opposed for three-quar to- ters of a century. The Republi iith can party in power brought on the lost war with Spain, and the country 3ent has not forgotten the fact that in Congressman Grosvenor, the s a spokesman of President McKin ity. ley, declared on the floor of the red House that it would be a Republi of can war. The subsequent ap the pointments of political favorites ,her to good paying positions in the en- army, and the favors shown troops riz- from Republican States, which ons were pushed to the front, while will those from the Southern States, the half equipped, are still held in uts camps, show quite conclusively that Mr. Grosvenor knew whereof ac- be spoke when he said this would uld be a Republican War. ore JUSTICES OF THE ere PEACE - NEEDING CITATION ve 'he BLANKS in CAN FIND THEM AT li- THE ort MESSENGER OFFICE ns AT the FIFTY CENTS PER se- HUNDRED. The Police Jury of Vermilion, I ly, together with other parishes in in the State, having placed a road led tax of $1.00 on wagons, .75 on 1n- carts, hacks and buggies, and .50 t of on sulkies and bicycles, intends to t we improve its road system, as the t air whole revenue so created, is to be ses expended upon the parish high- g ed ways. It has always been our o ly; idea that the road treasury should a crt be separated from the general, I and sustained as nearly as possible, by those who use roads. ' Of course the non-using land ow vi- ner should pay something, because are of the enjoyment of indirect ad rer vantages, but not in the identical ke proportion to his neighboring free- n r- holder, who subjects the highway ti to continual use. The road is not a of a charitable institution, and so, is rr- not considered under the light of ad that theory. We believe the en te. actment and enforcement of a pa- ti rish road law here would be of a0 le highly appreciable benefit. If St. 01 is- Mary is indisposed to resort to the im road tax Franklim might consider ý the thing in its own interest.- Vindicator-News. Listen to the complaint: The recent jury term of the dis e trict court held here discloses Ssome of the encroachments of that a wretched farce--the constitutional t convention-the most sacred rights o of the people. The grand jury has been cut a down from 16 members to 12, and it has been stripped of the great j bulk of the power, which has been -transferred to the district attor - ney. Here in Natchitoches where it never before sat less than two a weeks sometimes four, it finished -up last week in less than one, so Smuch of its former work was done Sby the district attorney. The petit jury had little to do the first week of court-a jury of five being used in a few cases, but none in most--and this week it was discharged on Monday moro mes the first thing after court assem 3rn- bled, while next week's panel has ;on- been notified not to come. iar- Thus the sacred rights of trial bli- by jury is slowly but surely and the stealthily being wrenched from itry the hands of the people and pla ;hat ced in the hands of the lawyers. the T'he right of suffrage has alrea ,in- dy been abridged, debauched and the befudled, until the average citizen bli- considers it almost worthless. ap. The great declaration of inde ites penaence vouchsafed to every man the the right of life, liberty and the ops pursuit of happiness, and as both ich life and liberty has been endan jile gered by the Louisiana Democrats tee, the only thing left absolutely un in trammeled to our people is the ely pursuit of happiness-with but eof little prospect of catching it. ald Little did we think that English speaking people of Anglo-saxon descent, born on American soil, and inured to freedom would sub mit to the destruction of the great principle the Magna Charto and the Declaration of Independence. All these frauds upon humanity were attempted to be passed as constitutional amendments, and _ submitted in the general election of 1896 were almost unanimously W voted down by the people. ti And yet there are animals pass ing for men, who will not only pi vote for Democrats again, but for p the very Democrats mostly instru mental in working all this ruin of m, liberty. -Nathitoches Populist. in Our baby has been continually trou bled with colic and cholera infantum on since his birth, and all that we could do ,50 for him did not seem to give more than to temporary relief, until we tried Cham- I he berlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea be Remedy.
