IOUSTON, T.h3 That Canned Beef Again. Chief Surgeon Daly, who was od duty with Shafter's army at Tam pa, and Porto Rico, stated in his report that the beef supplied as food to the army was unfit for use, having been injected with delete rious drugs and chemicals in order that it might the better resist a tropical climate. This is the stuff which the commissary department insisted should be used as an army ration, the opinions and advice of surgeons and the orders of com manding offetsa to the contrary notwithstanding! Moreover, according to the re ports of fifteen army officers in Porto Rico, furnished by General Miles to the war inquiry commis sion, the canned beef issued there as rations, under orders from the commissary department, was "no thing more than refuse after vari ous kinds of soups had been ex tracted from it,-a "slimy looking mass of beef scraps, unpalatable to the taste and repulsive to the sight," which "had no nutriment in it, and turned the stomachs of the men who tried to eat it." These army officers are the men, clearly enough, whom the canned beef contractors ought to sue in the courts for slander and libel, and against whom Commissary General Eagan should direct the fire of his wrath. How to Prevent Pneumonia. You are perhaps aware that pneumo nia always reselts from a cold or from an attack of la grippe. During the epi demic of la grippe a few years ago when many cases resulted in pneumonia, it was observed that the attack was never followed by that disease when Cham berlain's Cough Remedy was used. It counteracts any tendency of a cold or Is grippe to result in that dangerous dis ease. It is the best remedy in the world for bad colds and la grippe. Every bot tle waranted. For sale by T. J.Labbe. A novel case was recently deci ded by a Philadelphia magistrate. A rabbi and his assistant were ar rested by the agent of the society for the prevention of cruelty to animals on the charge of plucking live chickens in the market place. The rabbi made a partial denial, and said: "The Talmud provides for the killing of animals for food. According to its provisions I, as a rabbi of our holy religion, am per mitted to make an incision in the neck of each animal to be used for food by Jews. As soon as the blood has been drawn I am per mitted to dress the carcass accor ding to our law, which is to be cleansed at once. The chickens I plucked had been killed according to our religion." The magistrate declared: "Your religion may permit you to pluck live chickens, but the law of this country does not" He fined de fendants $10 each, and upon their refusal to pay it they were taken to prison.
