Tho W Qekly Messenger, PUBISMG, ltl ! rUIATUXDAT --It - ST. MARTINVILLE, - LA. ALBERT BIENVENU - Proprietor. LAIZAIRE BIENVENU - Manager. OFFICIAL JOURNAL OF TUHE TOWN OF NT. MARTINVILE. SVUBBCRITION ONE DOLLAR PiE ANNUM INVARIABLY IN ADVANCE. SATURDAY JAN. 21. 1899. AN ILLUSTRATION. Mr. Editor: In the last issue of The Weekly 1 Messenger, appeared an article re- r produced from the Wasington, La., Enterprise, in which that paper comments on a loan (,f $1,000,00 sold at a premium of 60 per cent. by our local Building and Loan Association. The editor frames t his figures on a maturity of nine years. As stated (at that rate) the borrower will pay in the sti pulated time 725,00 for the use - of $400,00-a per cent of 20 11-80 per annum, as he pays yearly 880, as-59. Now, the length of time it will take a given series to mature un der the Gross or Net Plan, can only be ascertained approximate ly. This mode of arriving at an approximate estimate of the rate of progress, must be applied to each series in a given Association seperately, and the rate of profit ' regulated in accordance with the average rate of progress ascertain ed to each. For, an older series, by reason of a higher aveage of gain in former years, might show a higher avenge of progress to wards maturity, than a younger one, which, for obvious reasons might not be so fortunate, owing to a slack demand for loans, and a lower rate of premium prevailing during a given period; or, exactly the reverse might be the case. The St. Martinville Building & Loan association has been selling money regularly for the last two and three quarter years, at pre miums ranging between 25 and 61 per cent. the average being 40. The first series: A B C and D have realized each but a small pro ft, (the first year), on account of e4penses incurred for the esta blishment of the Corporation. With series E began the era for regular accumulations, each share of said series realizing $16,06 from October 1896 to December 31st 1898, and with an increase quar terly, the disbursement per share being $29,25. Series F (two years old) realizing 815,29, disburse ment $26,00, per cent: 58 21-26. We admit that 60 per cent. is a very high premium, although the borrower bha the privilege to re pay his loan at any time, thus say ing 7-8 of the premium it he re pays one year after, 6-8 is he does repay two years after, and so on. The increase, in the profits is so perceptible, quarterly, that the following illustration, will give a fair idea, in regard to the maturi ty of stock. One shareholder borrowed $800. 00 at 40 per cent. premium, on February 1, 1897. He got 8480,00 net cash. He pai& as follows: Two yr' nlateret to February 1,. 18 l0O Two ar~s premiase to Feb. 1, 1i8 9a00 Total 8176.05 lee dlvidsd edited to hil etock oa December lIM. 64.2 4 BI. 8111.76 Henoe, that borrower is paying up to date 655,88 per year in pre mium and interest, for the privi lege of using $480,00 cash he got from the Association. He is then paying only 11 77-120 per cent. in terest per year, and reduces his debt gradually. And, further more his dividend is increasing quarterly, wiickh v i, of course, diminish his percentage. In the above, we have not included his dividend to come, on a loan of $1,600,00 made on Jan. 10th 1899, at a premium of 501 and 521 with interest on principal, will lower his percentage to 10 per cent in terest and a fraction, per year. Certainly, to obtain money at that rate, on a credit of #ight years, more or less. are advantages only offered by Building a41'11Loan I Association. C. GBsIo, I Secretary. For sale by e T. J. Labbe. e a 0 -Messrs. James Fuselier and j Felix Olivier were arrested and jailed by Constable Ben Bertrand t 11 Tuesday night, under a grevioue charge. Fuselier shot and ser.i n ously wounded a negro boy aged 12 or 13 years, a load of bird shot t n entering one side of his body, com ;e ing out at the other side, making a serious wound which may prove fatal. They are also accused of it beating the mother when she tried i to relieve her wounded boy. The i boy is said to have been insolent towards Mr. Fuselier, which was the cause of the shooting. The details of this unfortunate affair are conflicting, and the exact truth r will only come out when the preli a minary examination will take place. The fact, however, of the shooting a down of a boy twelve years old, for his insolence, and the beating of the mother for protecting her son after he was short down, make the case a very serious one, if these are really facts as reported.
