The rice plasters sad mllers at g Crowley have of late been same- . what exercised became of zagge rated reports as to the etent of the rice crop now harvesting ins Louisiana, Texas, and ales in a Georgia and the Carolinas. Prof. S. A. Knapp, perhaps ourbbat a. thority in rice matters-he havinga given it his undivided attention for several years and having had great familiarity with it for many years, states that the rice crop - this year will not, in his opinion, exceed 3,100,000 begs, thus falling some 400,000 bags belo the last rice crop of Louisiana and Texas. Other conservative parties are dis posed to form similar estimates of the crop, and we may be assured that with any such yield the prices of the staple will maintain I throughout the season. With a crop of three and a half million bags of rice in the South. west alone last year, it was found - that the demand for consumption was entirely competent to take it F off the market as rapidly as of fered, and thus to maintain remu nerative prices for it during the entire season. This year we have k had a drouth beyond the exper. s- ieuce of the oldest inhabitant. The fresh water bayous and lakes be came salt and the rice crop has unquestionably been very serious ly affected. To what extent we can hardly yet judge, but after a , few weeks, when Louisiana and Texas get fairly into their harvest, - we shall be better able to judge. A In the meantime we have every reason to believe that the crop N will not be a large one. How's This?
