Pu, lisher. nbscrietion $1,00a year invariably in advance a SATURDAY, JAN. 26, 1907. t W "v , C The Improvement of the t Teche. Representatives Broussard and *others from Louisiana are making every effort to secure large appro priations for the improvement of the water ways of Louisiana, and the following bit of news concern ing this section, which we took from the news sent out from Wash ington last Saturday, will he of some interest to our people, it fol lows:" "Improving Bayou Teche, La., with a view of obltainiig a six-foot navigation .t', Arnaudville, iii ac cordance with the report submnit ted in House document 527, first session. Fifty-ninth Conigre-. iland for maintenance, $118,500; provi ded that this expenditure for six foot navigation to Arnaudvillesliall be contingent upon all lauds nte cessary for lock and dam purposes and canal feeders being ceded to the United States free of cost, and upon the United States being se cured against possible claims for damages resulting from overflow of lands by reason of lock and dam -improvement, or from draining of Spanish Lake." The opening for navigation of the Teche to Arnaudville by dred ging a six foot channel all the way through, would make the Teche one of the most important streams in the state. Now if Coulee Pointe Clair could be dredged and made to connect with the Teche and also Bayou Portage just above Breaux Bridge, this would throw the whole of the swamp trade and the vast lumber industries of the Cypress swamps in easy reach of the Teche counu try, and this alcne would be worth millions of dollars, as the facilities would such be that saw mills and many other wood industries could be located on the Teche or even in the swamps and their product brought to market without long and dangerous routes through the large lakes. Such improvements would be of such great benefit to the Teche country, that our people can hard ly realized of what magnitude it would be. Let us hope that all these pro jects will soon be realized. The Right Name. Mr. August Sherpe, the popular over-seer of the poor, at Fort Ms dison, Ia.,says: "Dr. King's New Life Pill are rightly named; they act more agreeably, do more good and make one feel better than any other laxative." N]ow and then we see some of our state exchanges discussing the state political situation; we are certain to have three candidates for Governor, and two for Lieu temlant (Governor and a small army oft caudidates for the other state ofices. In parish or local affair there is already an under current wliich can be seen flrom the surface, we have heard the remarks that one of the candialees f,'r Sl!'rltt for this parish is actively at work at this early ,late, anid cntrary to his babi'*. t ,lWeased to stand the treat for has friends--thLs urcly means politics. The present Sheriff does not seem to be troubled about the other side, le seems to think that all they are wasting their time and ar ammunition, his popularity is too much for them, and every body will be qualified. Another candidate has already r announced himself for the legisla- fie ture, who was supposed to be with ha the weak side, but he comes out be on the Pelleriu side and he seems to think the other side will hardly be be able to make a little rally of to their deserted ranks. Another one has made the re mark "is it not time that we begin our combinations in order to be prepared and ready to finish our t already demoralized but courage onus opponents; we must finibsh them in great style this time; you know!" Cured of Lung Trouble. st "It is now eleven years since I had a narrow escape from consump tion," writes C. O. Floyd. a lead ing business man of Kershaw, S. C. "I had run down in weight to 135 pounds, and coughing was con stant, both by day and by night. be Finally I began taking Dr. King's to New Discovery, and continued this te for about six mouths, whem my it cough and lung trouble were en- at tirely gone and I was restored to bi my normal weight, 170 pounds." Saturday r night there was a change and the gentle south breeze was replaced r by a stiff north wind, Sunday was pretty cool and Monday was even colder, there was frost II and ice formation, but if this lit- P tle cold spell is not followed by f n anything more severe, no damage ° will be dlone more than perhaps Schecking the vegetation which was well started. Murder Case, A Morgan City special to The Times - Democrat dated January 18th says: "As the result of a family quar rel a sad tragedy was enacted at Cypress Island yesterday. The coroner's inquest held by Dr. Tar leton here to-day brought out the following evidence: Mrs. Spangler lives at Chicot Pass, in St. Martin Parish, with one of her sons, who keeps the goverment light at the pass, and yesterday came down Grand L:ike about ten miles to Cypress Island, where her son and a daughter, Mre. Puckett, live, to collect $10 which she said was due her from Mrs. Puckett. The two women became invol ved in a quarrel and Mrs. Packett struck her mother over the head with an iron poker, inflicting a se vere wound. She then secured a hatchet and drove her mother out ot the house. The old woman went to the dwelling of her son., a short distance away, and told her nephew about her treatment. Se curing his gun, Fred Spangler, ic. companied by his younger broth er, Eddie, went to the Puckett house. The Pucketts, husband and wife, met them at the door and a general shooting took place, Fred Spangler being shot in the breast and back of the head by Puckett and Eddie Spangler in both feet by Mrs. Puckett. The two Spaugler boys were I brought to Morgan City at once in a gas boat, Fred dying on the way. Eddie is not dangerously hurt, It is said that Pnckett has gone to St. Martinville to surren a der." On hearing of the murder Depu ty Sheriff Victor Maraist left for + the scene of the shooting, but learned the Pucketts, man and wife were at Franklin on their way here to surrender and returned with the prisoners Saturday after noon and placed them in the pa risl jail to await the action of the Grand Jury which will probably meet next March at the next cri minal term of the District Court. This case, like all the others that came from the distant swamps, will prove a very expensive one for the parish as all the witnesses will have to travel many miles to attend court. FOR SALE.
