FOR SALE--Magnnfieat corner lot in center of business portion in St. Martin tille for sale at a bargaint 8tslanes men be wise,, as L. lletlrieltl. Secret Societies and Religion. At a meeting of the National Christian Association of America in New Jersey a few days ago, one of the question discussed was "How can we best combat the se cret society evil?" and one of the speakers is quoted as saying , "We should put forth the argu ment that secret societies are op. posed to Christ, in our fight against secret societies, and I believe this slogan could be used to great ad vantage in our work." It is possible that there are se cret societies properly termed an i-.Chris*, hbit no one familiar with IhIn w,,kin; i of the best k'-iwn societies in American communi ties will ble uble) to repress a smile at the zeal of any organization that characterizes them as irreli gious. Possibly the appeal to sen timent and fear might deter some from joining secret societies, but to try to make those already mem bt-rs believe that these societies are what is claimed, simply by "putting forth the argument" is preposterous. The rituals of most secret socie ties are deeply religious in phras ing and spirit. Many of them will not accept a non-believer as a member. The Masons have out lawed their French branch for its agnostic attitude. Did the mem bers of the Masonic fraternity, the Odd Fellows, the Elks, the iKnights of Columbus, the W. O. W. and the hundred and one other secret societies ever hear in the lodge room the first thing that re flected on the Christian religion, or any other religion? Certainly not, for the member who would introduce anything of that sort at a lodge meeting would be imme diately called to order. Secret societies have existed since the beginning of civilization Their influence is for good. Their work is good and commendable. It is frateoronl, charitable and ben eficial. It is especially charitable, in evejy sense of the word, and that is more than can be said of those who decry them and attempt to Cast opproblum upon them.-Ex Having recently over hauled my workshop, I am now better able than ever to handle difficult jewelry repairing.
