L. BIENVINUT m ml The Craze For Automo biles. e (N. I. Dailey States) From all accounts the growth of the automobile trade throughout t Sthe Southwest has rusulted in pro- ' r pagating borrowing even to the extent of mortgaging homes, andU1 the matter has become so serious t that bankres in the territory adja- I b cent to St. Louis are viewing the ri situation with considerable alarm. a Recently a St. Louis brokerage tirm sent a letter of inquiry to 330 bankers in the Middle West, the 1 South and Southwest asking if the purchasing of automobiles in their sections was by persons who pay cash or by Iersons who bought with borrowed money on time pay went. It seems that almost every one of thie bankers to whom this lettet was sent expressed himself in y terms of condemnation against the purchase of automuobiles by per sons who coull not afford them. L A banker of Cape Girardeau, Mo., decIlared that the number of auto- a moblnlea had increased 300 per K cent during the last year, and with in the last six months only 50 per n cent were paid four by persons able to maintain them. Little Rock, Ark., has gone crazy on the aut, mobile question, and we are told that it has as many people who have bought the machines without being able to own them as any city of its size in the country, and one-half of them were bought on borrowed funds or credit. A banker writing from Moulton, Tex., says some persons there have spent the last dollar of their sav ings for years, and borrowed the balance, to make payments on au tomobiles. Quite a number of bankers expressed the opinion that the business is a menace to the prosperity of the country and very r soon the brokerage and banking houses will be compelled to take t notice of it. t Staggers Skeptics. That a clean, nice, fragiant eoipoudtl like Bucklen's Arnica Salve will instant ly relieve a bad burn. cut. scald, woultd or piles, staggers skeptics. A few Sears ago the State of SlIwa expended five million of dol- A lars annually on its roads without satisfactory results because of a A lack of system and supervisioni y S the township officers. But a brighlt j young man named Eichiniger, who t was the news editor of the Des , Moines Capital, conceived the idea J that the bad roads were due to hu man foolishness and inefficiency, and that good roads could be had almost for nothing in place of the had ones that were costing five millions a year, provided the peo le ple could be inducued to work to ;gether intelligently. Eichinger succeeded io arous ' inog public interest in the matter with the result that Iowa today has one road 380 miles long, from Daveuport, on the went bank of the Mississippi, to Council Bluffs, on the east bank of the Missouri. This road was made by the people of the towns through which it passes, with the help of the couon ty authorities, but without any public appropriatioun. The sys Stetm devised by Eichinger affords what is known as a dragges road which is well- surfaced highway properly crowned without holes or ruts and which is not injured by rains. It appears that the principle of the dragged road is to smooth the top surface an~to eliminate the ruts and holes in order to prevent water standing on the surface and "t softening the bed cf the roadway. \ We are told that the best time to it use the drag is soon after a rain ie when the ground is soft. It may a. be tlagged with exellent results even when the surface is slushy for the mud when smuothed over is soon dried by the wind and ba. kedl by thln sun. The drag throes but a small portion of dirt to the c-'nter at each trip, and this pro. cess kept up for a few season pro is uces a nicely roundedt top surface of successive layers of dried and baked dirt which becomes so hard that it is practically iulervous to water, unlees permitted t, staiind and soaked for a considerable Slengthi of tinme. 'The ordinary rein. , f fall that strikes thiat surface of the highway merely rolls away to the side ditches without doing any da- . i. mage. i.The process of making a road by tihe use ,f tine drag cannot beI I successfully applied to steep hills, but thnroughut a very large part of Louisiana, where the griound is level, tn Iowa methIod can ien used to secure greatly imnprvedi highways at cnmtirnttively slight r expende.
