Wileen the diameter of the silo is too great the silage is not fed rapidly enough to prevent some of it from spoiling. This' is particularly true when the silage is Led in summer. Care should therefore be taken that the diame ter of the silo be not too great for the number of cows to be fed from, it. The following table shown the least number of dairy cows that should be fed from silos of dia meter given: Diameter of Silo. We have noted before the efforts being made to interest the towns. on navigable waterways to the ne cessity of improving, their termi nal facilities, and making greater use of the streams open to them. This advantage has been called to their attention, and St. Louis, Ciu cinuati, Kansas City and others seem to appreciate the possibili ties offered if the facilities for loading, uuloadiung and transfbr ing freight are given the boats aso the railroads already enjoy. l'ii. old methods whereby the railroads put the competing steamers out of business on cut rates are no long er possible under the extended juriediction of the lusterstate Commerce ComsistSion, and the steamer or barge linues now enjoy a fair chuance of competition. Two of the three-room country schools, the Cove and Cecelia are teaching one year of the high school course, and the other one Cade is teaching the 8th and 9th grades. This speaks well for the progress of the country children. St. Martinville a n d Breaux Bridge High Schools opened with iaeord - breaking eurollmeuth of 272 pupils for the former and 246 for the latter. Large enrollments are reported by all the rural prin cipale. The new school desks for the country schools will be received October let. Work on the Bayou Chefe buil ding is progressing satisfactorily so reports from Albert Stooketill, a member of the school board, in dicate. The Duchamp Hardware Co., who had the contract to make the Cement floor in the basement of the High School, a gift of Gen. J. 13. Levert, completed the work this work. A Grand and Petit Jury for the Fall term of the District Court were drawn Thursday. -A nice rain fell here Tuesday evsuing that laid down the dust and refreshed the atmosphere, and was of much good to the cane.
