T: --0o--- I The black weevil is the worst enemy of corn from the time it be- m gins to mature in the field uuntil it bi is disposed of by fesding or selling fa on the market. Ihis insect lives cl Sduring the winter months in cre- w vices in the cr.bs, barns and other In adjacent buildings. Very few of it them will spuend the winter in the u field. a 'Ihe eggs are deposited in the It buildings as soon as the weather d becomes warm in the spring. The fi first geueration emerges some time c nu May. Corn tields located near the farm buildings are the first to ii become infested, as large numbers of adult weevils esmigrate during t the farm days of thb spriug and I summer. c Breeding begins in the fields t. usually when the ears are fit fur s roasting. If the field Is near wood- t labd the number moving into it r may be as large as from buildings. Early corn always fares worse t than that which matures late. It t may be feasible to planst some ear- t ly corn for the weevil to feed up- I on, leaving the other almost free. e The tight shuck is essential and c can be secured by field selection. I Carbon eisulphide is the mate- I rial to use in combating the wee vil. The gas formed is heavier than air, hence It will go to every part of the corn. The crib must be air-tight when it is used, to se cure the best results. The Amouut I _ to use is from twenty to twenty i five pounds per 1000 cubic feet of 4 space, whether the cr.b is tilled with corn or not. Warm weather is the best time to use it as the weevil becomes inactive when the temperature is as low as 60 de gree,--A. F. Kilder, L S. U. SA Compliment To The Jews. -i--0-- A lt hw mn lasrIti Su.day Rev. , Father John Murgue deliversd an interestiig sernioli upo.n egotism " an(ud charity, showing conclusivsly ' how importaut it is that we, as e Christians, should not let out ego Itistical teudercies cause us to think of and consider uothing but mat ters perltaining to ourselves. We should, he said, display charity - f:r our fellow-man, not necessari - ly by giving him money, but by - doiug whastever we can to assist a him mud make his life more plea ' sent. "It is for this reason" added Fa ther Murgue, "they are so success z. fol." Tractors On Sugar Plantations! Some weeks ago, an annon'ce ment was made that, Henry Ford, builder and manufacturer of the famous Ford Automobile, had pur chased a large plot of ground on which he had planned to erect a large factory equipped with all of the latett maLchintry for the man ufa":ture of light tractors. 'The article sail that Mr. Ford expec ted to build a tractor that would ( do all the work on the ordinary 4 farm, and that it v ould cost $250 4 complete. The announcement caused great uinterest thrioughout the United states, and especially in this sec Lion where the power used to do the wuik in the fields has been ex cuedluKily heavy. lhu original price to stock a plantation with a sutfficient number of mules to cul tivate it, pius the expe.se of feed ing them, requires it small fortune iloue. If the tractor will reumove this heavy expense, and furnish the planter the means of a machine that will do his work better and perhaps at ous-oight the present coet, surely we will be glad to wel come the tractor with our warmest hanud-shake. - The Napoleouville Pioneer. Commission men in certain parts of Ohio, realizing the value of good roads to their buneiness, have arranged to offer to farmers in ter ritory adjacent to their towns, a .series of prizes for the best kept stretches of county highway run I ning through the various farms. i'heby rightfully believe tha, many Sof the maintenance problems can he solved by securing the farmer's . co operation, and their efforts to secure this co.operatiot are to be highly recommended.
