Aye, and they '" are references which speak in tone' which outrival the notes of the bugle th blast of this institute as an educator. , This institution has been in existonce th but a few years, but in that time it has won a name in the world of ed ucational instruction which should d be exceedingly gratifying to every one to connected with it. As each scholas- or tic year closes there goes from its tii portals graduates who in the world P' of busy care, attest by their success- bi ful careers in every branch of indns- s try, the thoroughness of the instrue- til tion received while a student in this g8 institute. aJ We said previously that the Thatcher institute had been in ex istence but a few years. That is L true, but the name of Thatcher has I for a quarter of a century or more t been before the pnblic as a school teacher, whose ability would enable him to shine with brilliant luster in comparison with those connected with institutions of far more high f sounding names. The Thatcher ff Acadamy had a reputation which t should cause the warm blood of pride to course through the veins of I " any man, however modest; long be fore the institute was e:en dreamed Iof. It isof this we can write best, I for it recalls recollections of our own u I experience under the dear old teacher, Prof. George E. Thatcher, ''Captain 1 - Thatcher," his old scholars loved to h call him. o It has been said, and we think wise- a - ly, that he who instills in scholars the ambition to study, is the best in structor. For peculiar ability in t , this direction we commend Captain George E. Thatcher. The student a e who could be under his instruction t - for any langth of time, listen to his , t quiet, earnest talks. and not be im e pressed with the desire to be some- c thing more than an indifferent parti- t cle of humanity in the "world's broad t- field of battle" was an anomally which . no one woulJ care to understand. Well t ý- do we rememember those old dayr, . Swhen no one but the Captain and his estimable wife eondueted the school. Hlow kind, how considerate, how at e tentive the dear old preceptor was to d the scholar who desired to study. In oar several years of attendance , there we never found our friend the teacher, too tired, too hungry, too Samuch occupied with private busines "' during school hours, reese, before or Safter hours to listen to, instrucet and d advise students who were indstrious it and desired to learn. And further. we have yet to hear of the scholar ' who had reached the age of apprei ation who turned his beek on lthat cooul house for the last time, o- ma studmnt, ad ea ried not with Sbhim a warm feeling of friend t ship far the good pedagogue is wh preided over the school. - And when the student did leave V. it was always with the Sm ra of ambition burning in his tmaut Sthe desire to be a "hbero in the it. striSfe of lte's battles, kindled thue > darlng those qast alks between 3 pupil and tsehr, whis tb lster alwpislml nged to sere at pplr :IH 5. the pet, als of the T h r a front place in the ranks of promi- n neat men. And judging by the past, I we feel safe in saying that the inusti tute, with the kind gentleman as president, is fully able to hold the f: same high position among the edO- I cational institutions of the country ý, that the old academy did, and we therefore can folly conmmend it to the parents of children whom they de- I sire to educate. ni OUR TRAVELING MAN.
