A peti tiou was circulated and signed by C n every one to whom it wat p,resentld, e u regardlea of church or calling. This b cansed I)r. Wharton to agree to re main over until T,. sday night. Mon day night he was again importuned º by Dr. Penick asking an expression * of the immense audience (without a having consulted the evangeli-t) to it Sremain with us during the week and e cancel his engagement at Little Rock. Ark. To this request every mart, wo man and child responded by rising to their feet. Dr. Wharton said he had asked ti Little Rock to release him, and they ii , had refused. That it seemed from ' ~ the action taken by the people in re ,l sponding to Dr. l'enick's request that he was not in it, so he would leave c the matter with Shreveport and Lit- I tie Rock. No answer was received v from Little lock at noon Tuesday, and the evangelist announce.d his final meeting be Tuesday night. This annonncement fell upon the I congregation with a with a wave of universal regret. Never before in our life has it ,been our pleasure andt privilege to witness so general a feel-,. ing manifested by all without regard it to creed or church. In fact both saint and sinner unite with one accord inI saying that Dr. Whharton has been a a iwer for good to this city and corn- 1 mnunity, and long after he has left usI his coming will he blessed by hun dreds who feel that he has shown 'them a better life and better way. He i Shas made many homes happier, and t t been the means of causing hundreds to stop and think and change Their u lives. Let us hope that these re solves fay be carried out to the end t of life. Again we repeat that his go ing from un is spoken of with uni versal regret. Wherever he may go the prayers and best wishes of a h unite:l people will follow him from this city. He has not only made the 1th churches better, but in that porsua sive and pleading way (peculiar to o himself) the man of the world has t been made better for having gorne to tl hear him. Surely the power of (iod I is with this man. 1 (food-hye, Dr. Wharton' your corn ing among us has caused a bright and hi beautiful spot to ever remain in our lives, and your leaving one long, ling- tl 1 ering regret. tl Elstner's Jersey butter at Lee's, f only 30 cents. In fact Dr. Wharton seemed to feel so good that he thanked everybody, and with a benediction to the Lord the im mense congregation took their final leave. During the meetings a collection was taken up for Dr. Wharton's orphanage in Baltimore and a good sum was raised. A committee of gentlemen cosmposed of Mesrs. J. H. Prescott, George A. Turner, C. D. Hicks, V. L. Fulton, F. I. Goeman, Captain Williams, Alien Mor ris, W. E. Glassell, unknown to the evangellst, went quietly over the city and raised over five hundredl dollar- this was unuolicited by Dr. Wharton yet the citizens, without regard to church or creed, samint or sinner, re sponded cheerfully. Dr. Wharton, by a rising vote of the entire congregation, was invited to visit Shreveport again. He was assured the freedom of the city.
