Alas! that man should over be,
.o prone to warfare as you see;
War that eahances eveorythng,
That commerce or the seasons bring.
You ask what makes the leather riser
It is the war, the tanner cries.
bhe cows do still wear hides he sees,
And bark still grows upon the trees.
Woolen and Ilnean rant Ihe cheap
in war-tho' we havo hemp andsheep.
Nay, everything we eat or wear,
Tis war, of course that makes it dear.
An aged matron went to buy
A candle for to light her by,
And finding that the priec was more,
By full three cents than 'twLas befl.re,
The grocer asked how caine it so ?
The war! he cried-the war you know.
The ancient d5aeue upturned her eves,
And Sith a sih fgbr mlankind cries:
Alas ! a!a sol do they tight,
These Ineklesu, tiutcs Ivy candle light?

SOUTHERN CONFEDERACY
Ready Proof Press,
Patented June 1st., 1861.
To Country Publishers.
1H E want of a cheap proof press
has long been felt by publsherp of
country papers and mal Job Offices.
The undersigned:knowing this fosan
experience, has invented s press of
this sort (similar to Hoe d Co.'s) and
offers it to the craft as the chieapest
in the market. Instead of a solid
cast-iron cylinder, it is made ofsheet
iron and filled, being i decided im
provement, as it gives elasticity to
to the cylinder. The cost of an or
dinary proof press is 850, while this
costs
SOnly $20. .a
Terms cash.--Boxing $2 extra.
Printers know the effects of taking
proofs on the hand press. The pro
cess being not only slow, but injures
both to the press and the type.
This press obviates Iall those disad
vantages. It might also be used to
print small bills.
It isimade light for transportation,
weighing not over 75 pounds, the bed
being made of seasoned inch plank.
It can be placed on a table or box, and
requires but little room.
Printers visiting Shreveport ase
requested to call and see the press.
Address J. DICKINSON,
Shreveport, La.
Papers publishing the above will
be entitled to a deduction of ten per
cent. in case they purchase.
