Tax FIneT BALE. -The first bale cotton
of the new crop grown in West Feliciana,
was raised byLfr. Jasper Edwardson the
-'orest plantation, and was ginned at the
steamgin ofMessrsJulius Freyhan & Co.,
in this village, on Thursday last, 16th
instant.
Correction.-Since writing the para
graph announcing the first bale of new
cotton from this parish to be that
raised by Mr. Jasper Edwards and ginned
was raised by MIs. W. A. Cheatham, in
this parish, and was shipped to Nalle &
Cammack N.O., on the 12th Instant. Mr.
Edwards was not far behind however.
-This thing of having a post office
without the benefits and conveniences
usually dispensed thereby begins to as
sume a condition of tediousness. No
stamps, envelopes or money orders can
be obtained under the present situation
whereby serious inconvenience is work
ed, particularly to the business communi
ty. The department should either ac
cept the qualification of the present
incumbent or provide us with an offi.
eer who can furnish such requirements
as will satisfy their fastidious tastes. It
should be done .at once too.
-A few words to those of our readers
who have sons or male wards to educate.
-Preemi'ent among the many institutesof
learning of which our country may proud
ly boast, stands the St. Louis University,
the advertisement of which appears in
to-day's SENTINEL. As an educational in
stitution it has no superior in the United
States as is attested by its many grad
uates who are now occupying high posi
tions of honor and trust and who are
brilliant members of the 'society they so
fitly adorn. All inquries addressed to the
President, Rev. Jos. E. Keller, S. J., cor
ner of Ninth St., and Washington Aven
ue, St. Louis, Mo., will meet with prompt
attention. Prospectuses announcing rq
ductions in terms and containing all neces
eary particulars, and which we gladly
place at the service of ourreaders, may be
seen upon application at our office. Speak
ing of the University the St. Louis
Democrat says: "Its curriculum is exten
sive, its isptruction searching, its gov- 1
ernment rigid, and its results-accom
plished scholars."
"The facilities wh ich it affords for ob- t
tainiug a thorough classical or commer
cial education are unsurpassed."-St.
Louis Times. t
"We need scarcely remark that the
most solicitous care is paid to the mor- C
als of the pupils; in a word, a young man
leaves the University capable of distin
guishing himself in any walk of life, and O
with correct principles.."- lWesteru Celt. SY

An old saying (and not altogether an to
untrue one) is, "a ponysaved is two earn- be

earned, and in purchasing an organ if

buying the Start Parlor Organ. See ad

GREETING.
STo-0day .the SENTINEL app
pearsamong its patrons in a
new dress, and with a slight
alteration in its name. In the
great commonwealth of Lou
isiana there. are no two
parishes that combine in a
greater degree all the ele
ments that lead to future
prosperity, than do those of
West and East Feliciana.
With a climate adapted to the
raising of every variety of ag
ricultural product; a soil no
ted for its fertility; situated
upon. that great channel of
commercial, intercourse, the
mighty "'father of waters ;"
within easy reach of the proud
metropolis of the South; popu
lated, by a brave generous,
intelligent, industrious and
chrivalrous eople with ma
tca Iacct acSu er, -; usIoms, Ia11
ners and SYMPATHIES inseper
ably blended and interwoven,
they stand as a unit among the
galaxy of parishes that adorn
the proud escutcheon of the
Pelican State. As their inter
ests and their future are link
ed in one common destiny so
do we blend their names and
to-daty throw to the breeze our
banner, " inscribed with no
West, no East, but bearing the
inscriptioh, FELICIANA l As
the SENTINEL upon the watch
tower, guarditig one -common
fold, our energies will be bent
alike to the maintenance of
the interests of our sister par
ish with those of our own, and
should our humble pen per
chance, be the instrumentality
in at least a small measure, oi
promoting the ultimate pros
perity and well being of both,
then will our highest aim have
been attained and we will
have had the satisfaction of
repaying, to a small degree at
least, the liberal support they
have bestowed upon us.
LETTER FROM TUNICA.
t'UNIcA, LA., AUGUST 10th, 1877.
MIR. EDITOR :
Thinking a few lines from this
portion of the parish might prove
of interest, I have thought proper t
to provide you with an account t
f a social gathering that took a
)lace yesterday under the auspice, t
!f the. Violet Social Club. It was c
he occasion of their anniversary tl
.nd was celebrated by a pic-nic and c:
ance, at Row's Landing. The peo- t
le began to gather on the grounds a
s early as 9 o'clock. At 11 o'clock
ie club arrived with about 50 in
ited guests and the -assembled
umpany immediately commenced ai
"trip the light fantastic" to mu-.
er furnished by the club's band, Of
bich, by the way, was of mo::t al
rcellent quality. The members tip
this popular Club have every of
nprou to feel proud of the favorable m
upressions made by them, which Ni
ill live in memory far into the gi
tare. th
At 2 o'clock dinner was an
unced and a choicer or more
mptuous repast I have never par
ken of. About one hundred la
es and gentlemen surrounded the
ble; champagne was dispensed* 4
th a liberal hand, and many
Ire the toasts offered to Tunica's
autiful daughters. Among the
sembled fair was the beautiful
d accomplished Miss N., of
ookhaven, who is paying a visit
our neighborhood, and who,
is whispered, is about to capture
cupid's snare, one of our noblest
ung gallants. Allow me to say
r. Editor, she would do honor
any State.
After dinner the dance was re
med and continued until the de
ning orb of day cast his last efful.
snce on the scene, "lighting beauty uou
to glory," when the sad words of stul
.ting were pronounced, and we ca,
ok our departure for home, the we
!art of many a beau lacerated by c.
ipids golden arrows. oml

.PARISH OFFICIALS.
A wide spread erroneous
P idea seems to prevail as to the
ht duties encumbent upon parish
he officials, and the manner in
which they should be discharg
Ro ed. This misapprehension up
a on an important subject, not
u_ ufrequently leads to misun
re derstandings, hard feelings and
of harshi criticisms. Tiae Officers
)a of the law, acting in con
he formity with the statutes reg
g ulating their procedure in
o_ the discharge of their respec
ed tive duties, are often subjec
of ted to rash and unjust criti
he cisms and judgments when in
.t fact the non enforcement of
ud the law is, in but too many
u_ instances, attributable to the
a, ignorance of the parties exer
nd cising such judgements or
a- to their hesitancy in
i- 1 ý- ..iu-,i.g *.,u.vL .-·...-..:ý.. _
will lead to the arrest of wrong
doers and the punishment of
he the guilty. The duties of
rn Sheriffs, Parish Attorneys,.
he Magistrates and Constable- do
not constitute them DETECTIVES
k- or POLICEMEN0 The 'Sheriff
so makes arrests by virtue of a
nd WARRANT from some commit
ur ting officer, based upon a
no sworn affidavit. The Parish
he Attorney can take no action
1 save upon facts under his
,_ immediate observation or that
onare, communicated to him by
nt competent witnesses. Every
of citizen owes certain duties to
the State, and among
id diem none is more conspicu
er ous, after the general observ
ty ance of the law of the laud,
01 than that of aiding in the pre
s servation of good order by
correct information of its vio
Ve lation transmitted to the pro
ill per authority. If citizens per
of mit the fear of bodily harm or
at the injury of their individual
interest to work such restraint
as to deter them from the
performance of this duty, we
find it difficult to imagine how
they can consistently find
fault with the officers of the
law.
WARD OriCtIps.4-O ing to the fail
ure to qualify on the part of many of
r those returned and declared elec ted,
Ir to Ward ollices at the late election, there J
k are no less than fifteen vacancies in the
several Wards of our parish. Of these
there are 7 Justices of the Peace and S
Constables. We are not s little surprised C
y that no action towards filling thcse va
d caucies has been taken, or it there .lhas,
that it has been utterly devoid of results.
It is an important matter and should
Sreceive the attention of the Governor
k without delay. Many of those canid
dates who were declared elected, having
failed to qualify within the time pre- C
scribed by law, their positions are racant
I and are now subject to executive appoint- a
ment. We are not aware that any one A
of the several Wards has made sngges
tions as to persons who would be accept -
able to the people thereof for these posi
tions, but believing that the appointment
of the following named persons would
merit their approbation, we recommend to
that they be commissioned by Governor
Nicholls without further delay. We l2
