WHY ARE WE RIGHT-HANDED T
Investigations which were recently
carried through by a French physician,
Dr. Floury, of Bordeoix; have addnucedl
facts showing that our natural impulse
to use the iumembois on the right side of
tlhe body is clearly traceable to probably
physical causes. Dr. F'cnry,. afer ex
aucininig an immense number of .hncnau
Ibraillns, assorts that the loft anterior lobd

Again, lie shows -thatt, by examiniuig a
large number of people, there is an sin
eqtual supply of blood to the two sides of
the body. The brachiocephalie trunk,
which only exists on the right 'of the
arch of the aorta, produces, Iy a diftor
olino in terlninatioii, an inecrqality in the
waves of red blood which travel from
right to left. Moreover; the diameters of
the subclaviani arteries on each side are
dillbrout, that on the left ieing noticiably

t. I intrseuctinu of the nervonus fiber, it

is obvies tihat that side will be more
Ireadily cotrolled. This furnishes one
rea.son for the natural prefer'ence for the
right hand, and another is found in the
increased suplply of blood from the sn-b

frpm it. How different the "sentiments',
of the soldier and his horse going into
battle! 1-the one furlly conscious of the
horrible mutilation and agony that
await him; the other withuout an idea of
danger. Yeot the lovo of country, the
hope of plunder, the forc of obedience,
etc., bear the soldier on.
I see, thoroforo, that the intollect can
lay before the will motives, reasons, to
induce it to boar down all natural imcli
untions and act independently of them.
And as the intellect itself embraces the
trnth l nccrssarily,. all the times that it is
eridcut, I might be led to conclaule that
by cogency of reasoning, by making cevi
dent to the will which "good"' of' many
is the "best," it could determine the will
to embrace it. lint experienc shows me
that the will, having hoard the nobleost
pleadiugs of the intellect, c:as set them
all aside in favor of the most shameful
inclinations. Thus I see nmenn-and we
mene-in spite of the awful examples
around them, that plead so powerfiully
against intemperance, give themselves
up to this degrading vice.
Therefore I see that the will is frcc.
BesidesIf fool it in every act I pe form. If
I stay at home it is because I will it. If
I go out, I walk in the sun or shade just
as I prefer. And if any one endeavors
by threats to force my will, I fool that he
cannotdo it. Whetlierl make np my urind
to obey him or to suffer all the consequncel I
feel that I rdo make up my mind and that
I do so freely. Thus, at the present mo
menIt that the Czar is -marching "to dle
liver the oppressca Christians from the
tyranny of -tihe Turks," ho gives to the
Catholic Poles of Podlaclhia the option of
apostasy or persecution; and somen prefer
being flogged to dloath.
So far is the will from being ruled by
the intellect, that it cam very seriously
interfeoro with the intellect in the inves
tigation of truth. It can compel the in
tellect to listen to the reason on only one
side of the questioln. Thurs, in tihe all
important question of eternal punish
ment, it can force the initellect to dwell
only on those texts of Scripture in which
the imercy of God is set forth, arid nIot al
