Portland, Oregon, Sept. 16.- ca
Twenty are dead, four missing lb
and 2003 homeless, many without th
clothing, as a result of forest fa
fires which has swept the county M
from Cowlits county to Fool ta
mountain, a distance of twenty- m
five miles. It is estimated that A
$100,000 worth of property has
been destroyed during the past
week iq Washington and Oregon. '
It will not be known how many
* are dead until reports from re
r, mote districts come in. The es
timate of property loss does not
include standing tmber, but
covers sawmills, houses, barns,
shops, cordwood and and farm C
implements. Thousands of
acres of timber have been burned t
over but the destruction of large
timber has not been great. Re
lief is being hurried from this
city, Tacoma, Seattle and Van
couver to those who have lost
- their homes and crops. The dis
tricts where the greatest dis
truction occurred are Lents,
Spring Water and Bridal Veil, in
Oregon and Fifty Plain, Lewis t
River and-Elma in Washington.
In all the places it is estimated
id there are about 500 people with
out food and shelter.
