Knoxville Receives a Seri
ous Drawback by
Flames.

Knoxville, Tenn., Dec. 22.-A
fire which started at 1:30 this
morning and raged several hours
and destroyed property worth
over a million dollars.
Several firemen were injured I
by flames and falling walls.
The fire started in the four
story factory of the ;Knoyville I
Knitting Mills bu:lding and was
soon in ruins. The tlames spread
quickly and many other con
cerns were destroyed.
The explosion ot dynamite
wrecked the Brown hardware
building.
The entire wire service is par
alysed. The origin of the fire is
a mystery.

Chicago May Take Street Rai'w.ys.

Chicago, Ill., Dec. 22. -The or
dinance providing for the taking
over of the transportation lines
by the city will come up for spec
ia! consideration at the hands of
the city council tonight. The
bill provides a new method for
assuming the financial bligation
throughthe establishment of a
special fund into which the re
ceipts from operation of the lines
may be placed, and by the execu
tion of a mortgage, or deed of
itrust, to a 20-year fronchise as
security for the buyers of the
certificates. In case the council
I approves the bill it will beplaced
before the state legislature with
out delay.
Sentenced to Die.

alias Thomas Kelly, ex-manager
of the Empire Cafe, was sen
i tenced to die today in the elec
tric chair, with the week begin
ning Feb. 9, 1903, for the murder
of Ca.ptain James Craft at Ghln
cue, Long Island.
