TUE EAST ST. LOUIS VISITATION,
About turoo o'clock yesterday afternoon
East St. Louis was visited by tlio most
terrlQc and fntnl hurricane- ever ccon In
this portion of tbo country.
A tlOHT SOUTHEAST WIND,
vrhlch had blown steadily nil, tho after
noon, suddenly shifted to tho outhwest,
and in a few minutes a lead-colored cloud
was seen coming up the river, apparently
from tho Missouri shore, just below tho
city. The approach of tho cloud, which
resembled In appearance n driving mist,
vai accompanied with n rushing ound
like that created by the wings of an im

Near the coal dyke wero n number of
frame houses, which were torn to splinters
in tho fierce gale, and fragments of them
carried to a great distance. Tbo track of
the burricano was about two hundred
yards in breadth, and at tho dyke, throe
coal houses nnd a ticket oOlec, two
new frame dwelling houses, owned by
"VYm. Readcmcycr, and another ownr.it by
Mr. Scamp, wero destroyed. A train o

The loss was not ascertained, hut it will
probably reach several thousand dollars

upper works were swept cleanly from the

and it was stated that two men were swept

Tho most powerful effects of tho tornado
was probably manifested near the depot
of the Toledo, 'Wubasli iiiid AVosturn rail
