striking manner, this disposition to m
dulgc his own judgment in tho face of
nrolcst difficult to resist ; ami now, in
lu's conduct with reference to tho
threats made by tho Irish Catholics of
New York city against their hereditary
foes, tho Orangemen, ho has again
challenged tho applause of the country.
Revoking the proclamation of Kelso,
the policeman, forbidding tho Orango-
men'fl parade, ho declared that they
might parade if they wished, and sum
moned all tho forces of the state to pro
tect them in the exercise of that right.
All tho country will applaud him.
Every man, uativo or foreign -horn, who
respects our political institutions, will
thank him for stopping in nnd prevent
ing tho mob from assaulting liberty in
its most cherished home. If he had
hold aloof and allowed Kelso to pro-
nbit tho parade of tho Orangemen, a
precedent would liavo tnblishod
that would have resulted in manifold
troubles in tho future. If the New
York mob of Catholics had been per
mitted to prevent the parade of Orange
men this year, next year a Protestant
mob at Pittsburir, or Philadelphia,
onld liavo undertaken so prevent the
parade of Catholics. But Gov. Hoff
man understands tho institutions of our
government too well to permit the es

angemen; "If you wish to parade, do so;

'of the state to punish any body of men

had threatened tlio Catholics lio would
have done no more, uo loss. Bravo,

The conduct of tho Irish Catholics
