Logan was Conspicuously .Aii'

from thcOallatin Gazette, of tlio 212d
instant, that Mr. Joel G. .Morgan, the
editor, is confined to liis bed by ick
ncs.. How Did Major Munn secure n
Ecat in the lato radical State convention?
He, was not n delegate from Alexander
county, and had, in fact, no right in
the convention ho presided over.
I.v The Opinion of (lie Gallatin
Gaulle Mr. Wm. .Martin, democratic
candidate for treasurer of Alexander
will carry the county by a largo majori
ty. We have no doubt that Mr. Mar
-tin will carry the county, but democrats
should not forget that tho radicals arc
going to make a desperate effort to elect
Mr. Miller. Ifwehopeto defeat the
radicals we must all put our shoulders
to'the wheel, and each must labor-with
a will.
TiieJejipeiunck I'eople op The
State arc making arrangements to
call a state convention to nominate a
candidate in opposition to the radical
candidate for congress from the state
at large. They say they are consis
tent " taste not, touch not, handle not "
men, and declare that the lash of the
radical party cannot force, any General
Beverage down their throats. Special
beverage? may, they hold, be tolerated
in case of sickae.-i, but when their
party asks them to take down a Gener
al Beverage their temperate souls and
:cich? revolt at the proposition.

HIS RKPLY TO EX-CONFEDERATE

Tho following Is tho reply of Senator

him by sovornl hundred ex-confederate

Maxwell House. Nashville, Tenn.,
Sept. 23, 1871 : Gcntlcinitn I have re
ceived your letter, and. without alTectation,
I may sny that I can not find words strong
enough to deHcribo the joy it has given
me. The spontaneous expressions of such
sentiments as your letter contains, coming
from you as Into soldiers of tho confedcr
utoarmy, may well be called an event of
great signittcanco in tno History oi our
When vour former comraues, as you uo
now, rally once more around tho fla of
thti American republic; ns tho symbol of
uuiv ersal lreouotn, equal rignu nnu consu
tutional government; when they declaro
that thev will turn their backs upon all
parties, "groping in tho moonlight of tho
past, " and discountenance that partisan
spirit which is so apt to obseuro human
reason, and blunt the best moral impulse
of the human heart; when they onco more
fully recognize tho identity of their truo
interests with thoso of our great common
country, then every patriotic citir.cn will
feel that tho regeneration of tho South is
certain to bo accomplished by her own
people.
-If thero is still lurking hero and thcro a
spirit which koops alivo feelings of ani
mosity and distrust, and which, by means
of social proscription, intimidation or vio
lence, strives to inpede the development
of free public opinion, you can render it
harmless by your influence and example.
If there are still disturbances of the peace
and order of society occurring, calculated
to produce tlio impression tnat tno securi
ty and the rights of citizens can be suffi
ciently protected only by the interference
of the general government in your local
concerns, you can dispel that impression
by devoting your energies to tho enforce
ment of the laws, thus providing tho ca
pacity of self-0verumcnt to accomplish
its legitimate ends hero as elsewhere.
If there is till an apprehension as to a
secret design to subvert the logical and le
gitimate results of tho war by reactionary
movements, you will remove that appre
hension by demonstrating that the young
South has risen above old prejudices and
obiolete aspirations, and is determined to
build up again the prosperity and power
of tho South on a basis in harmony with
the progress aud spirit of tho age. Men of
courage and conviction like you will do
