Most tjenorotM oll'eri of nj-ii-tfthi'u in
money, foci, or anything wnntcd, are
coming from every city mid town possibio
by telegrnph. The mayor has responded
to Jovernl oiTer., nsking thut coohed food

Firemen are on tho wuy hero from St.
LouW, Cincinnati, nnd other cities.
Tho wiitcr works uro entirely dentroyed.
They nru now blowing up buildinm in
tho line of the lire? to attempt to arrest its
progress.
Lateii. It i- now believed the spread
of tho fire southward hns been staved at
Hrrion street, but on the north side there
is no diminution or its fury, and this en
tiro div ision of the city is evidently doomed
to utter destruction.
1'hcro are grave, fears that the tlatne
will pread to tho we?t side of tho north
branch of the river, on J tho inhabitant
on tho idreets nearest the river arc ul-
rcady moving to place'! of ruppo.-ed greater
safety. Tho etern Union Telesranh
have now six wires working cast and
south, and are running into a temporarv
odlce, corner of State nnd Sixthteenth
streets.
Tho Northwestern railroad K runninc
trains on both of its branches, which nro
crowded with fleeing citizens. It is now
positively averted by some that the works
are still intact! but tlmt the water has
been -hut off from th.i South and West
Divisions on account of the quantity being
used on the orth side. A t eliable gentle
man just arrived from the North Division
bridge tho joyful intelligenco that tho
waterworks are uninjured, liod grant it
may prove true.
111s iinpossiow now to give even an
approximately correct atatement of loses
but a faint idea may bo formed when it is
stated that every bank in the city, excopt
to small savings institutions, 'ons on Twon-
ty-seeond street, in the South Division, and
one on llandolph, in tho West Division,
aro Uenroycd. Also the wholosalo
stores, and all largo retail establishments.
tho rost-olllce, Court-house, Chamber of
Commerce, and every hotel in South Di
vision, except .Michigan Avenuo Hotel,
which Is standing on tho cxtromo southern
limit of tho Arc, c-cajied though badly
scorched; every newspaper otllco tho
Tribune building having finallv suc
cumbed, every theatre; six of tho largest
olevators; the immense depot of tho
Michigan Southern and Illinois Central
railroad both tho passenger and freight
dopots of tho lattor; more than a scoro of
churches, and much of tho shipping in tho
river.
Men who were inilllonares vetcrday

tainty that iniiny human beings Imvo
found llery graves, how many no one can
tclll, perlmpi. 110 0110 vim over tell, but
some uro known to Imvo psrlshed, and
theru is a heart sickening fear that the vic
tims of tho fiery monster may b counted
by score. Hundrods of hor.es nnd cows
Imvo been burned in stable, and on tho
north bide numben-, though loleased from
confinement, wero to bewildered and con
fused by tho son of llro which surrounded
them that they rushed wildly to nnd fro,
uttering cries of fright and pain, until
scorched and killed. Any attempt at n
description of tho scenes of this appalling
calamity would bo idle. Tho simple facts
arc, that tho onco great oitv of Chicago is
destroyed j that hundreds of millions of
her active capital huvo vanished, und that
nearly one-third of her inhabitants are
homolcis dependants, and any ntfempt to
embellish would bo hut luoekury.
As this uwful day draws to a closo
thousands of anxious eyes watch thudoiino
clouds which still roll over the burnt dis-
triet, with evident dread that n sudden'
clmngo of wind may turn the llnmos upon
tho portion of tho city yet spared. Tliero
seems, however, little causo for apprehen
sion, and reinforcements of firemen from
other cities aru constantly arriving.

tho buildings wero generally of tho cheap

shops, poor residences, etc.
Tho district burned over in tho west

from Dekover to .fufi'vr'on, it ran thence
four or five blocks north, and then moved
diagonally toward tho river, and finally
tho we-t lino was established on Clinton

It moved in this line northward until it
reached tho northwo-tcrn west sido depot,
where it stopped it distance of nearly two
