to put an end to hi- life by stabbing him

that tho wound was fatal ho wrote a letter
to Iii jailer, the conclusion of which was
as follows. As ou and others will be

The concluding scenes are described as
follows:
As he ascended the i-cnffold he looked up
to tho dangling rope, and flnelly took hold
of it with a nervous twitch, as if to test in
strength fur the terrible purpose to which
it was soon to be applied. Seating him
self in a chair ho looked calnil) ovtr the
whole multitude present, occasionally nod
ding hero nnd tlicro to thojo whom he
rw.m.nl7o.l. Kiimllv tho awful silence
was broken by thoSucrift, who commenced
tho reading of the death warrant in a ner
vous and hukv tone. When ho hud
tlnished the Sheriff said, " Now, .Mr. Wil
on. have voti anvthini; to siiv win tho
scntenuo should not bo executed ?" Wil
son, calmly smiling, delivered the follow,
ing
FAREWELL SPEECH.
" 1 don't suppose it will amount to much
what I can say, or stop tho execution. If
you won't nut it to execution, l would ay
a great dent."
Stepping to tho front of tho platform he
said :
"I suppose most of you know why I
shall say but a few words to-day. AVith
three inches of steel in his heart, :t man
cannot say much, nor bo expected to. I
did all I" could to avoid being hero ; not
that 1 fear death, hut such u kind of a
dcutli not lit for n dog or a murderer. I
inn not a murderer. 1 killed William
Willard In sclf-defeiiso nnd 1 did just right;
and I hopo his fata will bo n warning to
all other t rants iko him."
Then seizing the noiuc, he cuntinufd:
When n man puts thi over hU head in
tlio causo of humanity it is not a disgrace.
In that cause I put it over mine. "And,
Sheriff Rti"cll, tighten it up a- iuicl; as
you please.
Hero tho chaplain interrupted hv atk'n
WiUou if ho should pray fur liim, to
which the indeinncd answered, "Well, I
don't caru if you make n ."hurt prayer.''
Tho fhiipliu indulged his wish, andthen
tlio murderer stood up to pay the penalty
of his cime. As tho Sheriff drew tho cap
! over his laeo ho exclaimed, " 1 hope my
act will bo a bcnellt to tho people in W'cth
orstield prison, and that tney will be so
treated as never to render it novenry to
kill another A arden.
ooop HV."
Tho sheriff now bid tlio dying man good
bye, and said, " God havo mercy on your
soul, " and then touched the fatal spring,
and all was over. Ho fell about fit-lit
feet, and death was intatttaneojs. Tlio
body was cut down in about twenty min
utes, nnd In ten minutes later tho kiiiven
of tho surgeon wore at work in tho region
of his wound. It was discovered that tho
wiro had actually penetrated tho heart,
nnd tho result would havo been fatal In u
