THE CHOLERA.
A curious theory in regard to tlio cause
of cliolerii U Just now receiving much nt
tcntlon. It Is thai of UaHpallc, who hohli
that anlmaleuliu nro its primary origin. It
is mi old theory, It la true, but none tho
woric, for that; nnd whnt elves It import
Mice now i tho fact that there is a remedy
for it. In 1810-50, during tho
ravngo of tho cholera In tho
West Indies, it was found on oxumlnlng
microscopically tho water of tho localities,
whero the disease existed, that it vm im
pregnated with nnimalculiu foreign to tho
place, which disappeared simultaneously
with tho disease Thcso aniinalcuhu
would die when placed in contact with
camphor, which seemed to he to them 11
dvauly poison. This is tho evidence in
support of Has nail, and a thorough micro
scopical investigation of tho water in lo
calities directed, and f tho evacuation of
a sull'urur of this pestilence of tho Ganges,
it is evident will establish the fact that
tho discaso U iiropagatcd by animalcule.
In view of this. I: is suggested that nil tho
water used for drinking purposes should bo
well boiled nnd kept tightly covered, for
it Is in tho water whero tho
greater number of animalcule uro
tound. Wo should ulso carefully ab
stain from all liquids which have not been
thoroughly purified by fire. A judicious
use Internal! v of n few drops of spirits of
camphor daily, destroys tho anlmalculiuas
fust as (hoy enter thoVystcm, thereby ar
resting the disease. Comphor is 0110 of
tlio remedies for cholera, ns well for a pre
ventative nt for mitigation or euro ol tho
disease.
