Dr. Aiislln, wo regret to say, has dis
posed of his business in Cairo with the
intention of removing to Maine, in which
ttato ho will permanently locale. Hu
will leavo to-morrow. Dr. Austin is a
superior dentist, and during his residence
hero has built up a lucrutivo business and
mado for himself u host of friends. Ho
and his estimable lady will bo greatly mis
sed from tho society of Cairo, and will
tako with thorn to their new homo hearty
withes for tholr prosperity.
Wo havo seen tho model of tho dirt
excavator invented by Mr. W. S. Lane, of
this city, and believo it to bo what 31 r. L.
claims for it, that is, thut it will answer
tho purpoi-o for which it wns intended tot
ter than any oilier manliino in existence.
As it would tako more, time and spaco to
give a correct description of it than wo aro
now prepared to duvoto to tho invention,
wo will say that any one who desires to see
tho machine, can do so by
calling upon Mr. Luno at his
residence, whore, ho will lo pleasxd
to exhibit it. It is certainly a valuable
invention, and we hope its inventor will
reap a rich reward for tho time and
trouble- ho has oxporlunccd in his putting
ideas to o good n purpose.

Something over a wook ago wo pub
lished an account of an outrnco committed
by four mon upon tho peron of a couple
of highly rcspoctablo ladies living In tho
vicinity of Clinton, Kentucky. Search

trators of tho docd, and thoy were all four
captured. Thoy wore taken to Clinton,
tho county seat of Hickman county for
trial. When tho fuel that tho villains

known to tho people, it was only by tho
greatest efforts on tho part of tho ofllcors
that they wcro saved from being taken
out and disposod of by mob law. A spec

prisoner! passed through tins city on Tues

tho.CaJroCfty Mills, nt tho corner of
Twentieth strcot and Ohio lovee, owned
by Mr. Charles Gallgher, exploded with
inch forco as to completely demolish the
boiler houto nnd onglno room.
At tho tlmo tho explosion took placo
there, woro but two persons In tho onglno
house; one whs Mr, Harrison Stump, nnd
tho other a Mexican, who up to within u
fow days has been employed as n laborer
on tuo Cairo and Vincciiiics railroad.
From what wo can learn,
tho engineer, Mr. Stump, had tested tho
gages but h fow minutes before the explo
sion, nnd found that thcro wns plenty wn.
tor in tho boiler. Mr. Stump was stand
ing lit front of tho boiler, near the door of
tho onglno house, facing Twentieth ctrcct,
and tho Mexican was in tho act ofshovellng
n coal, when tho explosion occurred. Tho
onglno wns thrown out to tho edge of tho
sldownlk, nnd nlmoit covered out of sight
with boards nnd timbers. The Mexican wns
thrown some thirty feet from tho build
ing and ciimo down in a vacapl lot. Both
men were severely scalded about tho face,
arms nnd limbs. Tho engineer, Jir.
Slump, received several cuts und bruises
about tho head and face, whilo the Mexi
can received a very bad cut on tho fore
head. Thoy wero immediately removed
to McGauloy's drug storo whero every
thing that could bo done for them was
dune. Dr. Wardner wns called and did
all in his power to relievo the sufferers.
As said aboru tho engine house was
completely demolished, not even so much
us a po9t left standing. Tho force of tho
explosion will be bettor understood when
It is known that tho boiler that exploded
was forced through tho frame
house In tho rear of tho mill,
and carried adistanco of ono hundred and
soventy-llvo yards, whero it struck 11 stablo
in the yard In tho roar of tho Williums'
saw-mill, which it completely demolished.
In its course, it passed through several
tree;, and ouutf them, a tree, about ten
Inches through was broken as if it wcro a
Several men who were at work in tho
Egyptian mill, on the opposite sldo of tho
struct, wero standing near the door open
ing out on Twentieth street, when tho ex
plosion took place. Tho steam, hot water,
usbes, etc., was burled across tho street
with such forco us to blow open tho doors,
und thu men believing that tho whole end
of tho building would fall, ran into thu
hired. However, no damage, beyond a
few broken panes of glass, was sustained
by tho Egyptian mills.
It is said by competent judges that tho
boilor in this mill bus been in n danger
ous condition for some lime, nnd Hint il
is only to bo wondered at that they stood
it as long ns they did. Indeed, wo wcro
informed yesterday, that only two or threo
weeks since, an engineer who wa nt that

mill, throw up his position bocauso he con

tective, and that th.it was tho causo of thu
explosion. Now boilers and a now engine,
now at tho mill, wcro to havo been put up
as soon ns tho business of tho mill would
allow it to bo shut down.
