TICK 7ILAI.VK MOVEMENT FOR Till RBPUH
(New York Herald Washington Telegram.)
It la CHDIiblo of tiroof tlint n mnvornnnt
was begun as loni: aco as tho liolidnv ro-
cess, to sccuro tho nomination of Speaker
Ilalno a tho cnndldnto of tho republican
party for president. It is true, as lias boon
stated, that ho was Induced about that
tlmo to withdraw )ili nntno as it candldato
for vice-president, for fenr his candidacy
for that position would Injuro his prospects
for tho head of tho ticket. Tho movement
received little actvo sympathy, until tho
tho tide of malcontents commenced drift
ing towards Cincinnati. Then it grow In
favor with certain northwestern republi
cans, and, finally, a sufficient number
of Congressmen from tho cxtremo northern
belt of states had joined tho combination
to rnako itjformidahlo. Mr. Maine's per
sonal popularity, which his powerful posi
tion as speaker brings him In, giving him
many opportunities to favor his lellow
momhors of tho House, together with
tho threatened quarrel in tho party, woro
cogent reaons for Its success. His con
sent was nut sought at ilrst, and possibly
novor was obtained ; but his personal
friends wero sullleiently discreet in their
conversation regarding tho subject to con
vey tho Impression thnt ho would accept a
nomination and yet not compromise his
fealty to (Jcnora! Grant. Letters woro
written to prominent parties In Wisconsin,
Minnesota and Michigan intended to pro
moto tho success of tho combination, but
evidently exerted little influence, a thoso
States havo declared for Orantand Colfax.
After tho actual division of tho party over
tho Cincinnati movement, tho schema was
abandoned. Mr. Maine then gave In his
adhcrenco unequivocally to tho nomination
of General Grant.
Tho wholo afl'air was managed so dis
creetly that each and evory person en
gaged In It could havo said, and now can
say, that ho always was in favor of Ornnt.
In fact, It was "a feeler" for Maine, and
tho foregoing statement embraces all tho
truth on which tho recently printed stories
regarding tho pendency of a movement in
his behalf nro founded.
