ABOUT CABINET ORGANS.
Il may not bo generally undoratood,

capacity of the rood.
Ho dliflcult mid peculiar in this depart
ment of work ni to render it neccsitiry for'
n person to have u natural gift or tact in
handling tho delicate to.h used, nnd oven
than ltometiins require year of prac
tice to enable one to become proficient In
tills art.
Thura are only two or three of the lead
ing maker In this country whouudcrttand
tho application of what it callod 'tho new
nnd improved bend In tho reed, and
among them tho housa of Simmons &
Ciough Organ Co., of IMrolt, .Mich., have
madu their instruments deservedly popu
lar, und aro taking the lead in wny of tho
more desirable improvements,, buvjng se
ct! r-d the valuable "Scrlbner Patent,"
un application of tube to recdi, which
materially Increaso thu void mo of tone,
and at thu lame tlmo destroy tho wirey,
nietalic sound of tbo reed. This firm nlo
niaku uso of thu celebrated " Vox Ilu
mnnn, " &r ' Fan tremolo," und ulio tho
famous "Vox Colette " stop, the uso of
which has created such an cutory among
oldor mafiufacturer; wbo flnrl ll impossi
ble, with tboir stylo of bend und voicing
to moko a good job of it.
It is comparatively but a brief period
since this i!rm bg'au to make instrument
upon n largo scale, and offer them to tho
public nt largo through dealer, the homo
demand having I'iken tholr tntlro produc
tion heretofore, but wo are informed that
tho experience of this housa dates back to
the year 18.V), and it is Untie years of euro
fill study and experiment which combine
to make thlr Organs, in many respects,su
pcrior to those of other makers.
Tho musical editor ot tho Superior
(Wis.) 'Times' make mention of them u
follows: "We are impressed with nil wo
read and know of the 'Simmons S: Ciough
Organ.' Contrary :to the practice of
many other ettublUlimenU, this firm have
first "made a reputation for their noble In
strument, and then advertised them. It
is a mystery to us outsiders what they are
ndvcrtlslng for, as tho domand for thce
Organ now exceeds tho supply. Tho
great demand for them, in fact, bus com
pelled tho company to put up a now man
ufactory at a .cost ot nenrly $100,000.
There are only three instruments of tbo
cabinet organ class in America that we
should feel satisfied in purchasing, nnd
of tho threo wo far prefer the Instrument
rnado by Simmons & Ciough. It can
render all styles of music, from tho
thunders of church organ diapason to tho
strains of a fine military band, or lh ex
quisite tremor of fairy bells." l-lS-lf.
HOW TO "(JO WEST.
This is an enquiry which every one
should h'avo truthfully unswored before he
starts on his journey, and a little care
takeu in examination of Routes will in
many cases save much trouble, time nnd
money,
The "I. B. ii W. Route," running from
Indianapolis through Bloomlngton to Bur
lington, has achieved a splendid reputation
in tho last tv.n years as the leading piuion
ger route to tho west. At Burlington it
connects with the great Burlington Route
which runs direct through Southern Iowa
to Nobrnskn nnd Kansas, with close
connections to California and tho Torri
lori's;'n4 passengers starting from Cairo
on their wav westward, cannot do better
than to take the I. B. & W. and Burlington
route.
The Line has published ft pamphlet cal

much vnluablo information ; a largo cor
