From the Charleston (S. C) News.
A short timo ago a sailor wm tent to
to tbo cltv hospital from tho British bark
Georgian, who was supposed to bo sutler
liig lroin n toro leg. Tho man bad boon
uiling fur near threu montbt, but nono of
bis thlprustcs supposed that theru was
anything serious itio matter with him.
Accordingly, when a few days befuru his
removal to tho hospital, ho declared him
self unable to walk about, tbo captain of
tho tbip supposed that lie Wus endeavor
ing lo maku an excuse for getting
away from tliu vessel, that ho might
bu lull in port, tbo ship being
prepared lo (ail in a fuw das.
When removed to tho hospital, tho man's
right leg was very much swollen, mid
manifested all tho symptoms of erysipelas,
fur which malady his uU'eclion ws al
tint mistaken. At tho end of a fuw days,
however, an abscess formed upon tho In
ner side of tbo ankle, from which, after it
had burst, protruded about three inches of
a white, membranous-looking substance,
about an eighth of an Inch In diameter.
This singular manifestation induced a
careful examination of tho leg, which de
veloped tho fact that tbo man was hftlictcd
with the dracuitculus, or Guinea worm.
This is it horrible parasite, found only
along tho shores of the Indian ocean, lied
sea and certain (unions of tho Mediterra
nean. It infests damp and muddy soils
and impure water, and generally attacks
tho feet und lix'i but sometimes other
portions of tho body At the time that it
loisakes its native element for the more
luxurious habitation of fl-sh and blood, it
is scarcely larger limn a common lieu;
but, havii g unco buried l.self beneath tho
km, it grows with alaruilng rapidity, and
will attain a size varying trom six inches
to six feet In length, by one-twelfth lo one
eighth of nn inch in diameter. It lies
dirmant until it reaches tho ago of ma.
turlty, after which it commences a series
of wauderings and meanderings about tho
muscles and bones, which chusu inlensn
pain lo the unsuspecting victim. It ul
ways travels downward, and with such
rapidity that it will something travel the
whole 'length tt tho human frame in
twenty-foiif hours. It will sometimes
corny tn the surface and lie under tho skin
like a long white cord, but should tho
surgeon attempt to extract it with tho
knite without lint securing it with a
nipper, it will elude his grasp and scam
per away with the agility of an cel. If
a portion of tho worm is removed, tho
remaining portion will not die, but con
tinues as gay and lively as ever. Tho
tint symptoms of tho Guinea worm aro
a disagreeable itchinu and irritation of
tho infected parts. After it begins to
move about its paths are followed by ex
ternal ubicesH-.', ami viben the paths lie
along tho stomach, internal abscesses also.
It always ultimately endeavors to leave
tho system by working its way through
tbo skin, genorally near tho ankle, but this
is only after il has left from ton to fifteen
young behind. Tho usual number of
worm that are found in uno po'son va
ne? fiom iino lo fllty. There is one case
on record, however, of a man dying Irom the
effects of tho Guinea worm, whuto body and
skin were nothing but a net- ork of these
horrible creature. Death rarely results
from tho ravages of this worm, and when
it docs it is generally tho result of somn
disease produced by thn intUmmation and
other ell-cta of tho worm's wanderings.
Tho Guinea worm doe; not conQno its
ravages to man, but wi.l also attack (logs
and horses. The sailor in question rondo
a voyage to tho eastern coast ol Africa
about six months ago, and while thero re
ceived the parasites into his system. One
of these- worms lias already been extracted
from his right loir, but another bas made
its appearance in tho left. Ho is doing as
I well as can be expected under tbo circum
stances. 1 his is paorjatily the nrst cafe
of tho kind ever known in "Charleston.

An ahvantaok. A great advantage
possessed by tho Evening Star slovo is
that, owing "to its capacity and draft, you
can burn almost any kind of wood, and, on
account of its substance aud retention of
heat, you can run it with green wood
after il is tented, by having n small
amount of kindling material. Those hav
