THE TORNADO AT ASUPORT.
From tho Memphis Avalanche.
Wo have already printed tbe particulars
of the destructive tornado Saturday night
28tU ultimo. The itiirui crossed tho river,
doing grt damago to property at and
near Aaliport, on the Tennesseo aide.
Several houtei wore blown down. They
belonged, respectively, to Mra. Partee,
and John Conner, Junes Meadow, Hen
ley and Kvani. Among tho wounded
wero Jonei Meadowi, quite seriously,
John Connor, with two or hi children,
Mrs. Meadows, Mrs, Partee, and Messrs,
Evhih and llenluy, slightly. Forty men
went to help the citizemuf Ashport re
build. From tho Ripley 'New' ot the 3d
received last night tho following de
tail! wero obtained :
"Going from Riploy to Aihporl, we
boo ii reached the iteep declivity known aa
tho Bluff. Picking our wy down the
rough road, wathud Into deep gullies by
the recent rains, wo alowly descended Into
the dreary ahadea of tho bottom. Tho
devious path, miscalled a road, led u
through gloomy forests whose ailont ob
scurity kindled a feeling akin to awe, as
we quietly rode on for miles this quiet
Sabbath morning. Giving loose rein to
taticy, wo scarcely noticed the number or
broken branches lying acrosa und on
each side of the path, until the way was
completely obstructed by fallen tim
ber. Wo bad now arrived
at tho caucrn confines of
the terriblo tornado which about 1 o'clock
tho preceding day bad pasted through this
section of the county. Before us for
about three quarters of a mile lay a con
fused mss ot fallen timber, croiied and
piled in every direction. Let the reader
imagine bimsolf surrounded by theso mon
archs of tho forest whoso lofty branches,
waving in heaven'a sunlight, had stood
for ages, the muto monuments of creative
skill. See them whirling their tall heads
round and round from side to side, aa
they grapple with tho terriblo cyclone,
until abivered at the baac, or torn up by
the roots, yielding totheirreaistiblo power,
they fall with deafening craah. In tho
central part of tho hurricane not a tree
was leri standing.
"At Ashport fivo houses wero blown
down. Some of them wero completely de
molished, riot so much, even, as the blocks
upon which tho houses retted remaining.
several persons were considerably bruited
but none latally Injured. A gentleman
from Hale's Point learned from a passen-
ger on a boat that ono third of O.ceols,
comprising tbe upper part ol the town,
was completely destroyed. Twenty per
sons wero misting; a few killed and sev
eral wounded. It is reported that a party
of about thirty men went out from Osce
ola toward Sandy bayou to ascertain tho
damage in that direction. They re
ported that as far at they went
every bouse was swept away, and
not a single person was leund to tell
tho talo of disaster. From Osceola the
monttnr destroyer sped on tbe wings ot
fury acrois the river, to Diver's place,
Upsetting a few houses and killing one
negro, it comes on by the Emory dImco. in
a direction a litllo east of north, to James
Johnson's, laying prostrate a few more
houses and all the timber In its course.
Reaching Ashport, tben running u little
more to tbe east, striking the bluff a little
eait of Joe Pearson's, unrooting one room
of Jack Garrett's dwelling and tearing
down fence) and a few outbuildings, it
aeemed to have been satisfied with its
woric of ruin, for we cannot trace it any
A gentleman at Ashport states that he
distinctly saw tho hurricane approaching
at some distance. Ho could distinguish
logs, chunks, broken branches, and debris
of various kinds in tho air. All at once
ho experienced a terrible shock, accompa
nied by a tremendous roaring, crushing,
deafening sound, and became immediately
oblivious to all sensations. When con
scioutneta waa restored, ho found himself
covered up by boards, about thirty yards
rrom where tin bouse rormerly stood, his
wlli and children Iving scattered around
him, hut none of them severely injured.
One man is reported to have seen a woman
in mid air, about as high as the tree tops,
coming from tho direction of Arkansas,
and going east with unonviable speed.
"lho amount or damago In tho destruc
tion of houses, crops and stock, though
great, cannot as yet bo ascertained."
