Hfcre, in Illinois, tbo prospect Is good
for carrying tho State of Illinois for Uroo
loy. People living in other states
think that 61,000 majority for Grant can
not bo overcome but they do not compre
hond tho Liberal strength horo. There
are but two prominent Ropubllcam lu II
linoli, besidos thoio ro-nominated for Con
gross on the Grant ticket, of National or
oven State reputation who now
lupport Grant. Thoy aro John Logan and
Gov. Oglosby. Tho latter It nominated
by tho Orantltoi for governor, whllo tho
former never was a Republican until
tho Democrat! could no longor
elect him to congress. Ho was
tho author of a measure in tho
Illinois legislature to ell freo nogroos
into tlavery, if thoy ihould sottlo in Illi
nois. Ho la alio proved to bavo raited a
company to go Into tho rebel army at tho
beginning of tho war, and to have then
deiertcd them. Thli ! proved by the
worn ailldavits of several mcmbera of
the company.
I'KOMINEMT OHBELKY UKI'UUMCANS.
On tho Liberal aldo in Illlnoia aro
found half of tho Grant olectora in 18C8,
the entiro atato ticket olected with Lin
coln in 1800, aavo poor Yatcaj tho entiro
ticket elected with Lincoln in 18C4, aavo
Ogleaby; the pretont Halo officer, aave
tho treasurer and Auditor; boildea many
Republican oi-congreiimen, tho Hon. Ly
man Trumbull and tho Hon, John F.
Far n worth, prcaont members of congress,
and thirty thousand other Rcpublicana
now enrolled in Liberal clubs. Among
tho prominent aupportera of Dr. Greeley
la a Mother of Gen. John A. Rawlir.a. I
met him near Galena, and had tho follow
ing convocation:
Correspondent I am aurprlaed to find
you to actlvo for Dr. Grcoley. I thought
that tho personal friendship botwecn your
family and tho preildent would prevent
your taking a prominont part against him,
although, of course, every honest think
ing man must voto for Dr. Greeley.
WHY OKff. KAWLIX'8 1IROT1IER IS KOlt
OIIKKLKY.
Mr. Rawlins (quietly) Tho family re
lations aro not what thoy wero. Wo aro
better acquainted with the president, and
my father and my brother's son aro both
for Greeley.
Correspondent I thought General
Grant was appointed trustee for the $100,
000 fund railed for Gen. Hawlin's widow,
and also guardian of the children.
Mr. Rawlina (rclucUutly)-Ho was,
though you are mistaken as to tho amount.
Only $48,000 was subscribed, and Gen.
Grant only turned over $30,000. Ho
made some unintelligible statement about
a speculation with the otbor Sl-'.OOO, and
that was his only explanation. Gen.Raw
lin'a aon went East to seo him about It, but
alter being kept waiting three daya was
only granted a ahort interview, at which
be was treated vory cavalierly by the
president.
Other questions were asked, but the sub
ject seemed distasteful to Mr. Rawlins,
and he declined to talk moro about it.
It, however, appears that Grant charged
twenty-live per cent, for collection, which,
according to Mr. Geo. W. Curtis and tho
clvll-service commission, has been adopted
as tho r.Tiitsr fco bv subordinate officers.

Ia such a man fit for preildont of tho
United States 7 Our Grant candidate, Gov.
Ocleaby, thinks he is, and placing bis

Just under the lower button of his waist

there wrong about that? Who's got the

insult it is to tho people of our stato
to nominato such a man as Oglcsby In op
