On Tueiday evening tho largo steam
er Stonewall, Capt. Shaw, left tho St.
LouIh wharf, freighted for New Orleans.
Bho had large number of passengers
on board, and among her freight was a
considerable shipment of of live stock.
Hho proceeded on her way without acci
dent until about 11 o'clock tho ensuing
night; when, at a point about nlno miles
below Grand Tower, sho was discovered
to bo on fire. Tho flames spread with
great rapidity, and, of course, creating
tUie wildest consternation anil dismay
among tho passengers In an Incredible
short spaco of time tho wholo upper
works were lnveloped In flame, leaving
tho passengers and crew no choice .but
tb'pbiMi oil board, or incur tho dangers
of tho river. All who could do so, threw
themcelves overboard; ,and Alho flceno
that ensued, the cries for help, tho dying
shrieks of men, women and chil
dren as (hey struggled for life in tho
swift and chilly waters, beggar all de

perished afterwards from exposure and

near Tea Table, nine miles below Grand

some eight or ten miles, but did not go
back to fiec If she could bo of any assist
ance. Later news by telegraph report

take. Wo hopo Capt. Washington can

going back to the Stonewall.
