There Is said to bo fewer boats, nnd
more freightat Cairo for Now Orleans
than usual. Hallidnys huvo over G00O
barrels of Hour awaiting shipment nnd
altogether there nre between threo nn'd
four thousand tons of Now Orleam,
freight awaiting shipment. Paducah
'A''ift7ion.'
Should we admit the truth of the above
statement it doos not follow that there
is a freight blockade at Cairo and that
shipments nre seriously delayed. Four
Ihousiiud tons of freight might, nnd
frequently does accumulated ut Cairo in
forty eighty hour. With Kiich steam,
ers as the Great Republic
nnd Thompson Dean naviga
ting our lower waters, even thousands
of tons of freight disappear from our
wharfboatsnnd warehouses in n single
night. Thus the four thousand tons of
to-day glvo place to another four thous.
and tons to-morrow. We repeat that
full wharfbonts mid warehouses lu Cairo
furnish uo evidences of freight blockades
or dolnynd shipments. It Is simply "our
wny."

Some people have most extraordinary
notions of the powers and duties of tho
Mayor of Cairo. For Instance: During u
recont trip of a Cairo and Nashville
packet, n woodboat wnstakon In tow at
Mound .City, for a point above, and
whllo nttnohed to tho stenmer, wns
sunk. Tho owner of tho woodboat con
ceives It to bo tho special duty of tho
Mayor of Cairo to glvo this matter
attention nnd securo pay for tho
sunken boat, and such dnmagos besides
ns justlco may award. Other persons,
and their name is legion, seem impressed
with tho Idea that If thoy happen to
reach Cairo In n destitute condition, tho
Mayor Is under very solemn obligations
to replenish their depleted purses and
send them away rejoicing.
It is almost n wnsto of spacu to Inform
these Individuals that they wholly mis
talto tho powers aud functions of tbo
