Thursday KviNtNo, Feb. 3d, 1S70,
Our concral market, since our lait semi-
wcckly rcTlcw, has experienced no changes of
it, noU, npd business has been moderately active

and liav, nil continue in good demand, tind
ilWufyrVi.e!nUfell readliv on arrival. Uesidci there
beins a number of buyers for shipment of
sM(nearJr all the foregoing articles, the amount j
of bruines uono uy our rnercnants on orders
if larger than ever before, and is constantly
increasing. This branch of business may le
" attributed entirely to the cas v accessibility of
our market at all seasons, with tho consequent
, low rates of freight which are always obtain
able from this port to nit points soutli or us,
from whtneo nearly all this trade it derived.
If Cairo had tht amount of capital to spare
that would bo necessary to establish a line of
regular packets to rnn from 1-cre down, this
trade could be doubled and quadrupled with
in the next twelve months, At 1t is, she Is
compelled to patronize boats that are owned
and controlled by parties who are doing all
they can to divert trade away from her, by
unjust discriminations ana exactions, and
who, whilo they aro receiving thousands of
dollars from us weekly, in freights, do not ex
pond a dollar among our merchants for any
thing that can pouibly bo procured In the
ports where tney belong. That our business
should increase as rapidly as it does in do
spite of all these obstacles, is an unanswerable
i argument in fuvor of our natural Advantages
as to geographical position, which cannot be
overcome by nil the capital and influence of
the larger and wealthier cities, which are less
fortunately situated
Jt lour. we havo no quotable changes to
